The death notice, placed in the 地元の paper by the family of Katie Simpson, asked for 寄付s to a mental health charity in their beloved daughter’s 指名する.
It seemed fitting: Katie’s death at the age of just 21, 明らかに by her own 手渡す, had blindsided everyone. Charismatic and beautiful, she was carving out a career as a showjumper, had a new boyfriend and, in short, had the world at her feet.
Nonetheless, one morning in August 2020 she had seemingly tried to take her own life.
にもかかわらず desperate 成果／努力s to save her, she tragically died in hospital a week later, having never 回復するd consciousness.
The loss of such a 約束ing young woman in circumstances as terrible as these would be awful enough.
But as the months passed, the truth about Katie’s death 現れるd ? a horrifying tale of 殺人, 乱用, 強姦 and 多重の infidelities that has utterly destroyed her family.

Jonathan Creswell, 36, had been 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d with the 強姦 and 殺人 of Katie and was two days into his 裁判，公判 when he killed himself
Katie had known Jonathan Creswell since she was nine when he started working as a (v)策を弄する／(n)騎手 at the nearby Darten Ree Stables, in 郡 Armagh
It is a story so darkly shocking as to be barely believable, more like a Netflix 罪，犯罪 演劇 than that of everyday life in a small country village.
Little wonder, then, that the events of that August morning have not only riven Katie’s の近くに-knit northern Irish village, but has attracted attention 世界的な.
The first 調印する that this was more than just a 悲劇の 自殺 （機の）カム 比較して quickly ? hospital staff raised questions when they saw unexplained bruises on Katie’s lifeless 団体／死体.
Months, though, would pass before police would 開始する，打ち上げる an 調査.
When they finally did, it led them to a person Katie had known since she was nine-years-old: her brother-in-法律, horse trainer Jonathan Creswell. The partner of her older sister, Christina, 36-year-old Creswell was also father to their two children.
告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d with Katie’s 強姦 and 殺人, Creswell was （刑事）被告 of strangling her in a jealous 激怒（する） after finding out about her new 関係, before covering up her death by passing it off as 自殺.
Emotional text messages on Katie’s phone were to later 明らかにする／漏らす that she lived in utter terror of the controlling Creswell.

Not only this: he was also in 関係s with other women.
Three women helped Creswell cover up 殺人ing Katie, one of them mopping up the 血 and washing his stained 着せる／賦与するs after his ferocious attack on the young woman they knew so 井戸／弁護士席.
One of these women, a young equestrian 星／主役にする called Rose de Montmorency-Wright, 22, had 株d a house with Katie, Creswell and Christina in the village of Greysteel, 郡 Londonderry. She had even helped to carry Katie’s 棺 into the church on the day of her funeral.
Little wonder, given this intensely 乱すing nexus of sex, 暴力／激しさ and betrayal, that the 事例／患者 had transfixed Ireland long before Creswell’s 裁判，公判.
It finally opened last month, nearly four years after Katie’s death, and was 推定する／予想するd to last between six and eight weeks.
Yet just one day after the 起訴 began to 明かす their 事例／患者, it 現れるd that Creswell had taken his own life. His 団体／死体 was 設立する at his 演説（する）／住所 on April 25.
With Creswell’s death has come 激しい international attention.

One police source told the Mail: ‘It is one of the most コンビナート／複合体 事例／患者s we have come across. Creswell spun an enormously コンビナート／複合体 web of lies the like of which we 港／避難所’t really seen before.’
Certainly, the outwardly charismatic Creswell had been a philanderer from his 青年.
A former (v)策を弄する／(n)騎手 turned horse trainer, he was in his 早期に 20s when he first crossed paths with the Simpson family in the small 田舎の village of Tynan in 郡 Armagh.
Village life was 支配するd by the nearby Darten Ree Stables, where the young Katie, one of six siblings, spent much of her time と一緒に sister Christina, who was several years older.
‘Horse mad’ によれば her mother Noeleen, Katie was also a ‘real people person’.
‘She could talk to anybody and it didn’t 事柄 their age,’ she 解任するd in an interview before Creswell’s 裁判，公判 began. ‘Katie just lit up the room.’
The young Katie first met Creswell after he arrived to work as a (v)策を弄する／(n)騎手 at the stables. 探偵，刑事 Sergeant James Brannigan told an earlier 法廷，裁判所 審理，公聴会 his 影響（力） upon the youngster had been pernicious from the start.
‘He had controlled and coerced Katie since she was a child,’ he 明言する／公表するd.
And he already had a chequered past. The year before he arrived in Tynan, he had been dating a talented dressage eventer called Abigail Lyle - now 38, she today lives in the UK and is hoping to compete for Ireland at the Paris Olympics in July.
They had met at an equestrian event in Belfast in 2008 before 乗る，着手するing on a nine-month 関係.
In an emotional interview with the BBC last week, Abi 明らかにする／漏らすd how Creswell had beaten her throughout those months whenever she ‘did something that would be 容認できない to him’.
‘Those could be anything from 会合 up with friends, texting someone or going to an event he did not like,’ she 解任するd.
On severa l occasions he had beaten her so 不正に it left her looking ‘like a Dalmatian’ because of the bruises on her 団体／死体.
One attack saw him fill a bath with bleach and 脅すd to throw her in it. Another saw her in 恐れる of her life.
‘He took me into the 支持を得ようと努めるd and 脅すd to kill me,’ she said. ‘I thought he was going to do it this time, he didn’t 明白に, but that attack lasted hours. He was just （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域ing me, throwing me around, choking me, 叫び声をあげるing at me, calling me 指名するs and asking me horrible questions.’
After plucking up courage to leave him, she went to the police and, in 2010, Creswell was 刑務所，拘置所d for six months for 強襲，強姦.
Astonishingly, such was his magnetism that when Creswell returned to Tynan after his 解放（する）, a ‘welcome home’ party was thrown for him in a 地元の hotel.
He also 乗る，着手するd on a 関係 with Christina Simpson, with whom he went on to have two daughters.
Yet にもかかわらず setting up home with Christina, the philandering Creswell was 率直に sleeping with different women.
A long standing friend called Jill Robinson was の中で his periodic lovers, と一緒に a 30-year-old equestrian called Hayley Robb, who subsequently 明らかにする／漏らすd that she was 予定 to 会合，会う up to have sex with Creswell on the day Katie was taken to hospital.
At what point Katie’s own 関係 with Creswell became 性の is unknown, although 要点説明s to the Public 起訴 Service seen by the Mail 明らかにする／漏らす that Christina certainly knew her sister and partner had at least once 株d a bed.
On the morning of August 3, hours before Creswell made the 999 call 報告（する）／憶測ing Katie’s ‘自殺’, Christina had gone to her sister’s room and seen them in bed together.

Katie, however, had recently started a new 関係 of her own ? with Shane McCloskey, a showjumper from nearby Derry ? something she appears to have tried to 隠す from Creswell.
Katie remained unconscious for a week before her death on August 9, 2020. Later that day, Creswell 地位，任命するd a Facebook status about Katie
Londonderry 栄冠を与える 法廷，裁判所 heard Creswell had 以前 had an 'illicit' 性の relations with Katie
にもかかわらず 存在 ‘excited’ by her new romance, text messages sent just 24 hours before she was hospitalised show that Katie was also terrified of Creswell finding out about her blossoming 関係.
A frantic 交流 of messages with McCloskey later 暴露するd by police showed she had begged him to 嘘（をつく） about the fact they had spent the previous night together if Creswell got in touch.
When McCloskey 示唆するd it would be ‘easier to tell the truth’ she replies ? in what would 証明する to be a tragically prophetic premonition ? that Creswell would ‘go crazy’, pleading with her new boyfriend to keep 静かな.
‘This is crazy,’ McCloskey replied. ‘You’re terrified of him. It’s no good.’
Mere hours later, Katie would be taken to hospital by an outwardly desperate Creswell, who （人命などを）奪う，主張するd to 医療の staff that he had discovered Katie unresponsive at the family home after she’d tried to hang herself.
After calling 999, he had 辞退するd to let 救急車 労働者s come to the house, instead 運動ing Katie’s own car with her unconscious 団体／死体 in the 支援する ? dressed in just a polo shirt and her underwear ? to 会合，会う paramedics from nearby Altnagelvin Hospital.

Dressage eventer Abigail Lyle 明らかにする／漏らすd how Creswell had beaten her during their 関係
As 起訴するing counsel Sam Magee KC told 賠審員s on the first day of Creswell’s 裁判，公判, he had said he ‘設立する her hanging’, and she was ‘blue and not breathing’.
In fact, Magee told the 法廷，裁判所, Creswell had been 消費するd with jealous 激怒（する） over Katie’s 関係 with McCloskey, and had ‘strangled her and created a fiction’ in what he 競うd was a ‘calculating and deceitful episode’.
Nurses had raised 関心s that Katie’s 傷害s did not match Creswell’s account: she had bruises on her 団体／死体, with 多重の bruising to her inner thigh 含むing what appeared to be a boot 示す. There were also 指示，表示する物s of intimate bleeding.
Katie never 回復するd consciousness. Six days after Creswell drove her to hospital, on August 9, 2020, she died.
Later that day, Creswell wrote a 噴出するing 尊敬の印 to Katie on Facebook: ‘One of the best friends I could ever ask for, one of the most talented horse women I ever met,’ he wrote, peppering the message with heart emojis. ‘Best 追跡（する）ing buddy in the world, fearless in the saddle, fearless across the country. Hardest 労働者 born, best aunty to my children.’
にもかかわらず his effusive comments, questions continued to be asked ? and ignored ? about what had 現実に happened that day.
At Katie’s 地位，任命する-mortem, tram-like 示すs were 設立する on her 団体／死体 一貫した with having been 攻撃する，衝突する by a 棒. Still her death was 記録，記録的な／記録するd as 自殺.
Along with de Montmorency-Wright, Creswell was one of the tearful 棺／かげり 持参人払いのs at the small country churchyard at St Vindic’s Parish Church, the family’s 地元の church.
His 陳列する，発揮する of 嘆く／悼むing didn’t fool everyone, however: others who knew Katie felt something wasn’t 権利, and fought for recalcitrant police to open an 調査.
That 調査, when it finally 広げるd six months after Katie’s death, led them to Creswell.
Police discovered Katie had gone somewhere with Creswell in his horsebox at about 6pm. The pair had returned to the family home around midnight.
Considering what we know now about how Creswell 扱う／治療するd former girlfriend Abi Lyle when she’d displeased him, it’s probable Katie 苦しむd a terrible, violent ordeal throughout those six hours.
In the 早期に hours of the morning, Christina saw Creswell in bed with her sister.
Hours later, Creswell called for an 救急車, （人命などを）奪う，主張するing he’d 設立する Katie hanging.
The 正確な 詳細（に述べる）s of what 現実に happened after Christina left the house that morning are unknown and probably will remain so.
What police were able to 設立する, however, was the part de Montmorency Wright, Robb and Robinson all played in helping Creswell cover up the 罪，犯罪.
De Montmorency Wright ? a successful eventer who met Creswell through the equestrian scene while just a 十代の少年少女, and who Creswell 述べるd as his ‘Queen’ ? latterly pleaded 有罪の to 保留するing （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） by knowing Creswell had committed 強襲，強姦.
Jill Robinson, a long turn associate of Creswell, latterly pleaded 有罪の to perverting the 原因（となる） of 司法（官）.
述べるd as ‘ひどく loyal’ to Creswell, Robinson had 最初 put up his 保釈（金） when he was first 逮捕（する）d and と一緒に fellow equestrian Robb subsequently 認める washing Creswell’s 着せる／賦与するs at a launderette some miles away from the family home, after August 3.
Robb, who was 述べるd by one police source as 存在 ‘utterly 消費するd’ by Creswell, also 認める to きれいにする up 血 in the family home.
It was Robb, however, who 結局 設立する the courage to 収容する／認める what she’d done, and went on to b ecome a ‘whistleblower’, putting herself 今後 as a co-operating 証言，証人／目撃する.
‘She 述べるd him 存在 abusive and controlling and it was only when he was 再拘留（者）d she got the strength to really come clean about what really happened,’ a police source 明らかにする／漏らすs.
‘A lot of her 活動／戦闘s were out of 忠義 and 潜在的に 恐れる, but she did try to do 権利 by Katie in the end.’
All three women, who’d pleaded 有罪の before Creswell’s 裁判，公判 began, are now を待つing 宣告，判決ing.
In the 合間, the Mail has learned that Creswell was also 直面するing a 目録 of 主張s from more than a dozen other women in the wake of his 中止するd 裁判，公判. の中で them is a teenage girl who had spoken to police about 存在 乱用d by Creswell.
The Northern Irish Police Service has also been referred to the Police Ombudsman about its 行為／行う surrounding Katie’s death, with Northern Irish MP Nuala McAllister 明らかにする／漏らすing this week that she had a ‘lot of questions as to why Katie’s 殺人 was 扱う／治療するd as a 自殺 for the first few months.’
Katie’s grieving family are now left to 直面する the fact that Creswell has taken to his 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な the secrets of his last hours with Katie ? 同様に as leaving behind two young daughters who will one day have to learn the sordid truth about their father.
News of his death has undoubtedly stunned all 伴う／関わるd, with McCloskey telling the Mail it was a ‘抱擁する shock’.
