The women who exposed the first #MeToo スキャンダル: The story of the US マスコミ mogul Roger Ailes (刑事)被告 of preying on his staff is so appalling that Hollywood has made two films about it

With its tantalising blend of salaciousness and 大統領の impropriety, the 法案 Clinton and Monica Lewinsky スキャンダル was manna from heaven for Fox News. It was 1998 and the fledgling US cable channel ? desperate to 追いつく its more 設立するd 競争相手s ? couldn’t have concocted a more perfect story if it had tried.

A sitting Democratic 大統領,/社長 caught in an 事件/事情/状勢 with a young White House 抑留する was custom-made to 控訴,上告 to the 駅/配置する’s 的 右翼 audience and while others baulked at 公表/放送 some of the more tawdry 詳細(に述べる)s, Fox had no such qualms. The 手段 worked spectacularly. As the channel relentlessly 追求するd the story, 見解(をとる)ing 人物/姿/数字s 急に上がるd. Within just four years of its inception, Fox 攻撃する,衝突する the number one slot.

It was with some irony then that just as one sex スキャンダル put Fox News 堅固に on the 地図/計画する, it was another that brought 負かす/撃墜する its 創立者 almost 20 years later. Roger Ailes had (1)偽造する/(2)徐々に進むd Fox News into a broadcasting powerhouse that had essentially 覆うd the way for Donald Trump’s 進歩 to the White House. But in 2016 Ailes was 軍隊d to 辞職する as chairman and CEO when Fox presenter Gretchen Carlson とじ込み/提出するd a 訴訟 主張するing that he had 破壊行為d her career after she 辞退するd his 性の 前進するs. It opened the floodgates to a 破滅的な string of 主張s against Ailes from more than two dozen women.

Ailes’s story predates the 性の 乱用 主張s against Hollywood 生産者 Harvey Weinstein by just over a year, yet it perfectly taps into the mood of the 続いて起こるing #MeToo 時代. It is now the 支配する of two 星/主役にする-studded 審査する 演劇s told from different 視野s.

The Loudest 発言する/表明する, based on Gabriel Sherman’s best-selling biography, The Loudest 発言する/表明する In The Room, recently 空気/公表するd on Sky 大西洋 and 焦点(を合わせる)d 大部分は on Ailes himself (portrayed by Russell Crowe). In the 来たるべき movie Bombshell, however, the 焦点(を合わせる) is squarely on the women who brought about his downfall, 含むing Gretchen Carlson, played by Nicole Kidman, and the channel’s biggest 女性(の) 星/主役にする, Megyn Kelly, played by Charlize Theron. Margot Robbie plays the movie’s third 女性(の) lead, fictional 生産者 Kayla Pospisil. As Theron recently 発言/述べるd, ‘In Bombshell our monsters don’t always look like monsters, which is how it is in real life.’

Indeed, when Roger Ailes 開始する,打ち上げるd Fox News in 1996, far from 存在 見解(をとる)d as a monster he was seen as the ideal man to help Rupert Murdoch break the dominance of the 自由主義の-leaning cable news channels CNN and MSNBC. He had 以前 worked on the (選挙などの)運動をするs for 共和国の/共和党の 大統領の 候補者s Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and was fully aware of the importance of the 力/強力にする of television.

His understanding of how TV worked was no 疑問 補佐官d by years of 熟考する/考慮するing the medium as a young boy. Born in 過密な住居, Ohio, Ailes 苦しむd from haemophilia and was often absent from school, spending hours in 前線 of the TV watching Westerns. His 条件 didn’t, however, 妨げる his father Robert, a factory foreman, from (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域ing him 定期的に with an 電気の cord. Once, his father 勧めるd Roger to jump from the 最高の,を越す bunk bed into his 武器, only to step 支援する at the last minute. As he 選ぶd up his bruised son from the 床に打ち倒す, he imparted his lesson: ‘Don’t ever 信用 anybody.’ The ruthlessness and paranoia that (機の)カム to characterise Ailes’s professional career doubtless had their roots in his 早期に childhood 外傷/ショックs .

In 1993, Ailes joined NBC and was credited with 生き返らせるing the fortunes of its failing 商売/仕事 channel, CNBC, 3倍になるing 利益(をあげる)s. But his time with the 駅/配置する was short-lived. He left after two years having been made to 調印する an 協定 not to 乱用 staff members. It was to be a portent of things to come when he 開始する,打ち上げるd Fox News the に引き続いて year.

悪名高くも foul-mouthed and 肉体的に 課すing, his brashness did nothing to 阻止する Murdoch, who 結論するd when he met Ailes that ‘either this man is crazy or he has the biggest 始める,決める of balls I’ve ever seen’. And he was 証明するd 権利. When Fox News started, it had 17 million 加入者s, but に向かって the end of Ailes’s 任期, the number had 増加するd to 87 million. Yet によれば former 従業員s, his success was 設立するd on a culture of 恐れる. They (人命などを)奪う,主張するd he 秘かに調査するd on his own staff, 任命する/導入するing cameras and reading their emails.

Yet if keeping tabs on staff was bad enough, the m ost egregious 乱用 of his 力/強力にする 関心d women. His 伝記作家 Gabriel Sherman 暴露するd several stories of such 乱用, perhaps the most 乱すing of which 関心d Fox News’s former director of 調書をとる/予約するing, Laurie Luhn. She 申し立てられた/疑わしい that Ailes had 行うd a 20-year (選挙などの)運動をする of いやがらせ against her. 最初 事実上の/代理 as her 助言者, Ailes soon sexualised their 関係. He ビデオテープd Luhn in a suspender belt, telling her, ‘I am going to put [the tape] in a 安全な-deposit box just so we understand each other’, had her 成し遂げる oral sex on him and even had her engage in sex with other women. By the time she had been 促進するd to director of 調書をとる/予約するing at Fox, she was 推定する/予想するd to 雇う attractive 女性(の) staff for him, or as he told her: ‘You’re going to find me “Roger’s Angels”. You’re going to find me whores.’

Other women who were 報道によれば 支配するd to いやがらせ by Ailes 含むd Randi Harrison, a young 生産者 whom he 申し込む/申し出d £300 a week for a 職業, 追加するing: ‘If you agree to have sex with me whenever I want, I will 追加する an extra hundred dollars a week.’ Harrison was in 涙/ほころびs by the time she left the building.

But it was the (人命などを)奪う,主張するs by two Fox News 星/主役にするs, Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson, which precipitated Ailes’s demise. Carlson, a former 行方不明になる America, (人命などを)奪う,主張するd that at さまざまな times Ailes had made 性の 発言/述べるs and even asked her to turn around so that he could ‘見解(をとる) her posterior’. She started 内密に 記録,記録的な/記録するing their 会合s on her iPhone and during one 交流 he told her: ‘I think you and I should have had a 性の 関係 a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better.’ Carlson had also complained about sexist 治療 from Steve Doocy, her co-host on the show Fox & Friends, and was told by Ailes that she needed to ‘get along with the boys’. After 存在 demoted on the show in 2013 and 解雇する/砲火/射撃d from Fox three years later, Carlson とじ込み/提出するd a 性の いやがらせ 訴訟 against Ailes in July 2016, 主張するing that she had been let go for 辞退するing Ailes’s 前進するs.

Though he 否定するd the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s, just days later a その上の six women (機の)カム 今後 公然と 告発する/非難するing him of いやがらせ. But it was when 錨,総合司会者 Megyn Kelly 追加するd her 発言する/表明する to the discussion that the 令状ing appeared to be on the 塀で囲む for Ailes. One of Fox News’s biggest 星/主役にするs, she told 捜査官/調査官s that in the 早期に 行う/開催する/段階s of her career he had made ‘unwanted 性の 前進するs’ に向かって her and later 述べるd in an interview with 商売/仕事 Insider how he had tried to 得る,とらえる her three times, 追加するing: ‘I had to 押す him off of me.’

For Murdoch, this appeared to be the final straw. Though 明らかに the マスコミ 大君’s first instinct was to 保護する the man who had worked for him for 20 years, Ailes was finally given an 最終提案: either 辞職する by August 1 or be 解雇する/砲火/射撃d. Ailes 辞職するd on July 21, receiving a £30 million 賄賂.

He died on May 18, 2017, leaving his wife of 19 years, Elizabeth, their son, Zachary, and an impressive 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 業績/成就s, tainted by his own 欠陥s. The woman 責任がある bringing those 欠陥s to light, Gretchen Carlson, 結局 received a public 陳謝 from Fox and a 報告(する)/憶測d £15 million 解決/入植地.

Roger Ailes might have had the loudest 発言する/表明する in the room, but in the end, it was the women he 乱用d who had the final word.?
