La 争う en rose, Chanel style: There's a 推論する/理由 why Grasse in Provence is 深い尊敬の念を抱くd by perfumers ? for more than a century its diverse heady scented blooms have 力/強力にするd the world's finest fragrances, says Alice Robertson

In a few weeks, in the hills north of Cannes, between the shores of the French Riviera and the mountains of Provence, the roses will be in bloom, as you see here.

Each morning in May they?will be 収穫d for 排除的 use in Chanel's celebrated No 5 scent.

But there's more; jasmine, tuberose, mimosa, orange blossom and geranium all 繁栄する, too.

Where are we? Grasse, the perfume 資本/首都 of the world.

The town used to be known for leather tanning, but the work produced such an unpleasant smell that the tanners began to scent their wares with 地元の flowers.

And the fields around Grasse ? 避難所d from the 勝利,勝つd, with nutrient-rich 国/地域 and an ideal 気候 ? were the perfect 環境 for those blooms to grow.

Their 質 speaks for itself.

In 1921, when Coco Chanel asked Grasse perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a fragrance, he chose jasmine from those fields for what was to become Chanel No 5.

In the 中央の 1980s Chanel agreed a 共同 with the largest flower 生産者 in Grasse, reserving 20 ヘクタールs from the Mul family, and in 2021 拡大するd with ten more ヘクタールs of its own.

It's not just Chanel; some of the biggest hitters in the 賞与金 fragrance market, 含むing Dior and Lanc?me, have either 排除的 共同s with 地元の farms or their own fields.

With no 化学製品 fertilisers used, and fallow years between 収穫s, Grasse's 出資/貢献 to the fragrance world is 始める,決める to remain an 耐えるing 遺産/遺物.
