'She would only 再開する eating when I 納得させるd her I was okay': New 調書をとる/予約する 明らかにする/漏らすs why caring sheep will never leave their friend behind

NATURE

THE WISDOM OF SHEEP AND OTHER ANIMALS

by Rosamund Young (Faber £14.99, 259pp)

There are 22million sheep in the UK, yet when we see them grazing in a field, or walk の中で them on a country stroll, few of us give them much thought. They're not beautiful, like horses, or わずかに scary, like cows. 静める and stolid, sheep are 簡単に part of our landscape.

Growing up on a farm where her parents raised cows, pigs and 女/おっせかい屋s, Rosamund Young always thought sheep were rather dull animals, devoid of personality. So when 結局 she got 一連の会議、交渉/完成する to having her own flock, they were a 完全にする 発覚.

'Some are affectionate, others 傾向がある to headbutting. Some are determinedly self-十分な, others 捜し出す our help when they need it. And some can be 信用d to lead the flock home. They are as individual as we are,' she 主張するs.

Along with her brother and her partner Gareth (of whom more later), Young runs 道具's Nest Farm, a 開拓するing 有機の farm in the Cotswolds. When the then Prince Charles decided to make his Highgrove 広い地所 完全に 有機の, he made the 告示 from 道具's Nest, making friends along the way with a temperamental heifer called Catherine who, to everyone's astonishment, calmly 許すd the 王室の 訪問者 to 一打/打撃 her.

Young is 熱烈な about cows ― her 2017 調書をとる/予約する, The Secret Life Of Cows, was a surprise bestseller ― and she is now 平等に 入り口d by sheep and their quirky ways.

Unlike cows, sheep won't trample you if you walk 近づく them: 'It would take a 抱擁する event to make a sheep wish to 害(を与える) or even 脅す a person,' she 令状s.

They are good 裁判官s of character and are 特に drawn to children. 'Tiny people approach and the sheep stand still ― the same sheep that wander off, grazing singlemindedly, when I want to get a closer look at them.'

Sheep may seem placid and unemotional but they are 傾向がある to sudden bursts of affection, and every now and then one will decide it wants to be best friends with Young. 'I find it waiting 根気よく by my 味方する, having appeared from nowhere, and the 信用ing 社債 is 調印(する)d. I could decide to befriend a sheep but it wouldn't work. They are the ones who decide who to 信用.'

When she had been off sick for almost three months, her flock 迎える/歓迎するd her with joy.

'They 前向きに/確かに 襲う me on my return, looks of 不信 in their 注目する,もくろむs... as if they had 結論するd I had died, but were keen to show me how glad they were to be wrong.'?

Sheep are intelligent enough?to know when to ask for help, using 団体/死体 language, 注目する,もくろむ 接触する and the 時折の 深い baa to 表明する themselves. As a 種類 they are 'very 勇敢に立ち向かう and 技術d at not appearing to be in 苦痛, and thus 攻撃を受けやすい to predators', but when a ewe is having trouble giving birth, she can 伝える this with 'a 静める 星/主役にする speaking 容積/容量s, every shepherd in the world would have understood 正確に/まさに what it meant'.

Do sheep feel empathy? Young has noticed that if a sheep goes lame, or finds itself 絡まるd up in brambles and can't keep up with the flock, a 'friend' will hang around to keep it company.

They're not bea
utiful, like horses, or slightly scary, like cows. Calm and stolid, sheep are simply part of our landscape (stock photo)

On one occasion, when Young had 傷つける her 膝 and was hopping around in agony, a sheep that she had handreared as a lamb 'left her hay and (機の)カム to 星/主役にする up into my 直面する and would only 再開する eating when I had 納得させるd her I was 罰金'.

Made up of short 一時期/支部s on 面s of farm life, from the sheep and cows to the abundant 野性生物,?this is a delightful 調書をとる/予約する to 下落する into.

But it's not all about animals; there is even romance.

One evening Gareth, the 静かな lodger who rented a room in her farmhouse, asked Young if he could come and watch her milk the cows.

The milking machine had broken 負かす/撃墜する, and in the time it took Young to fetch her brother to come and 直す/買収する,八百長をする it, Gareth had mended the machine and milked the cow. Young was smitten. 井戸/弁護士席, who wouldn't be?

Young doesn't 演説(する)/住所 the morality of 殺人,大当り and eating these animals, so 信用ing and so 十分な of character, but makes it (疑いを)晴らす that the humane ― one could almost say loving ― way that they are 扱う/治療するd on her farm means they have a happy, 強調する/ストレス-解放する/自由な life before they are 虐殺(する)d. One thing is 確かな : after reading this 調書をとる/予約する, you will look at sheep in a different way.?
