All seemed 井戸/弁護士席 on the British 航空路s flight from London to Auckland as it 巡航するd high above the seas off Jakarta on the moonless night of June 24, 1982. But then (機の)カム the 告示, the nightmare of every 航空機による 乗客.

'This is your Captain speaking,' said 操縦する Eric Moody. 'We have a small problem and all four engines have stopped. We are all doing our damnedest to get them working again. I 信用 you are not in too much 苦しめる.'

Surely one of the most remarkable examples of a stiff upper lip in British 航空 history, it belied the 恐れる and 混乱 on the flight deck where 42-year-old Captain Moody and his 乗組員 had no idea why their engines had failed. All they knew was that their hulking 巨大な jet was now 効果的に a 巨大(な) glider 長,率いるing 急速な/放蕩な に向かって the ground and that every 決定/判定勝ち(する) they took would mean the difference between saving all ― or at least some ― of those on board and 災害.

The lives of those 263 people ― 248 乗客s and 15 乗組員 ― would depend 完全に on the 技術 and experience of Captain Moody, whose death in his sleep last month at the age of 84, reminds us of the events of that awful night. He had taken over the 支配(する)/統制するs of BA Flight 009 for the Kuala Lumpur to Perth (Australia) 脚 of the 旅行 which had started at Heathrow.

There, 57-year-old Betty Tootell and her mum Phyl had taken their seats in Economy at the 支援する of the City Of Edinburgh, as the three-year-old Boeing 747 had been 指名するd. Emigrants to New Zealand, they were returning there に引き続いて a trip to London.

A few 列/漕ぐ/騒動s ahead of them was Charles Capewell, who was travelling with his two young sons, Chas, ten, and Stephen, seven. In a few hours, the family 推定する/予想するd to be 再会させるd with the boys' mother 支援する at the family home in Perth. They were in good 手渡すs.

Captain Moody, who'd had his first taste of 飛行機で行くing when he took gliding lessons at the age of 16, was one of the first 操縦するs trained on the 747s.

An hour and a half into the flight and after finishing his meal, he took a lavatory break only to be 召喚するd 緊急に 支援する to the 操縦室 by first officer Roger Greaves and flight engineer Barry Townley-Freeman.

With the 計画(する) 巡航するing at 37,000ft, they had been 直面するd with pinpricks of light 砲撃するing the windscreen like 追跡者 弾丸s.

At first they thought it might be St Elmo's 解雇する/砲火/射撃 ― a '誘発するing' 現象 原因(となる)d by ionised 空気/公表する いつかs seen when 計画(する)s 飛行機で行く through 雷鳴-clouds ― but the レーダ showed a (疑いを)晴らす sky.

平等に perplexing, given the レーダ reading, was that the 計画(する) appeared to be 飛行機で行くing through banks of clouds. 非,不,無 of this made any sense.

Very quickly the strange visual 影響s on the windscreen turned into sheets of brilliant white light which 延長するd to the wings, lending them an eerie glow. It was just the beginning of the nightmare.

At the 支援する of the cabin, Betty Tootell had her reading of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park interrupted by what felt like a 揺さぶる of turbulence.

'I ちらりと見ることd over to the 左翼 and it was covered in a brilliant white shimmering light,' she said later in a TV 文書の about the 出来事/事件.

'I carried on reading but I 設立する that I kept reading the same paragraph over and over again and not taking in a word of it. I just didn't know what was happening.'

'I didn't want them to get as upset as I felt,' 解任するd Skinner. 'I was 説: 'Nothing to worry about. It's just a little hiccup,' but it got really hot and the acrid smoke was at the 支援する of your throat.'

'The other three went out almost すぐに and that's when it began to be a serious 緊急,' 解任するd Captain Moody. 'The engines made a grating, rumbling sound almost like a 固く結び付ける mixer,' remembered Betty Tootell.

'Then 徐々に the noise just disappeared and they became silent.'

'It was like you were 一時停止するd in space and all you could hear was this quietness and the whimpering from a few people that were really upset,' said Charles Capewell.

As far as the 乗組員 were aware, no othe r 747 had ever lost 力/強力にする to all of its engines and nothing happening 船内に BA009 bore any resemblances to the 状況/情勢s for which they had trained in flight simulators.

Still they knew that, even without its engines, a 747 can glide nine miles for every half mile it 減少(する)s and their 計算/見積りs 示唆するd that this would buy them about 30 minutes before they 衝突,墜落d. Since it typically took about three minutes to 再開する an engine, this gave them ten 試みる/企てるs at most.

They could not 再開する the jets unless the 計画(する) was 飛行機で行くing at 290mph-310mph but their airspeed 指示する人(物) had failed so all Captain Moody could do was continuously raise and lower the nose of the 計画(する) to change its 速度(を上げる) and hope that he got it 権利.

'We didn't know if the 炎上s were going to come into the cabin and if we were all going to 燃やす to death, or choke on the smoke,' said Betty Tootell. 'What's 原因(となる)ing it? What are they going to do about it?'

Without this, the oxygen masks clattered 負かす/撃墜する as they dropped beneath 26,000ft but flight officer Roger Greaves' mask fell apart as he tried to put it on.

Aware that Greaves would soon pass out without oxygen, Moody dropped the 計画(する) a stomach-lurching 6,000ft in just a few seconds, another ordeal for the 拷問d souls in the cabin as they 急落するd to a 高さ where they could breathe without masks.

Strangely there was no hysteria as mothers moved to 慰安 their children, couples reached for each other's 手渡すs and the flight attendants worked their way 負かす/撃墜する the cabin, teaming 単独の 乗客s with a companion to …を伴って them into the darkest of nights.

Charles Capewell said: 'The quietness was unbelievable. It seemed eerie and surreal, as if we were 一時停止するd in space. All we could feel was this quietness and the whimpering from the few people who were really upset.'

He scribbled 公式文書,認めるs to his wife. 'Ma. 計画(する) going 負かす/撃墜する,' he wrote on the cover of his ticket wallet. 'Will do best for the boys. We love you. Sorry. Pa.'

'Other people were sitting やめる rigidly almost as if they hadn't noticed anything,' said Betty Tootell. 'At first it was sheer 恐れる, then after a while it turned to 受託. We knew we were going to die.'

The 乗組員 had decided to コースを変える to the nearest airport just outside Jakarta, the 資本/首都 of Indonesia, but a quick 計算/見積り showed him that the 計画(する) would not make it even that far without at least one 機能(する)/行事ing engine.

'Now descending through flight level 3-5-0.'

As the 計画(する) dropped lower and lower, Captain Moody realised that a mountain 範囲 was in the way anyway.

He decided that if the engines hadn't 再開するd by the time they reached 12,000ft he would try to come 負かす/撃墜する on the Indian Ocean, even though he had never 試みる/企てるd a 上陸 on water before. 'I knew it was so difficult to land aeroplanes on the sea, even when you had everything going for you and we didn't have much going for us,' said Moody.

As the 計画(する) dropped to 13,500ft it looked ever more 必然的な that he would have to try this riskiest of manoeuvres on to shark-infested waters.

But then, as suddenly as it had stopped working, one of the engines roared 突然に 支援する into life.

'When a Rolls-Royce engine starts up, it makes this low rumbling noise and it was just wonderful to hear it,' remembered Roger Greaves.

The other engines started up after what seemed an interminable 90 seconds later. With only ten minutes to spare, they (疑いを)晴らすd the mountain 範囲 but their troubles were not over yet. As they finally (機の)カム in to land, they realised that the 上陸 system at the airport was 機能不全ing and unable to tell them how far from the ground they were.

As they approached the 滑走路, they were barely able to make out the lights and the 延期する before the wheels touched 負かす/撃墜する felt like minutes rather than seconds ― but the 上陸 itself was smooth.

'The aeroplane just landed itself, it kissed the earth,' 解任するd Ca ptain Moody. 'It was beautiful.'

Spontaneous 元気づけるs and clapping broke out as the traumatised 乗客s hugged each other.

'All we 手配中の,お尋ね者 was to land on the earth and be part of the living again,' says Charles Capewell. 'While we were up there we were dead.'

As the 計画(する) 粉砕するd through the 罰金 粒子s of 激しく揺する at some 500mph, the abrasion and 摩擦 on its 団体/死体 and windows had produced the strange 電気の lightshows seen all around it as the cabin filled with smoke. The engines had become choked by the 火山の 破片.

Only when they dropped into clearer, denser 空気/公表する and the 火山の 構成要素 was blown 解放する/自由な were the 乗組員 able to start the engines again.

に引き続いて the 近づく 災害 of Flight 009, the 火山の Ash (a)忠告の/(n)警報 Centre was 始める,決める up, to liaise between 気象学者s and the 航空 産業.

In the months that followed, the 乗組員 of the 計画(する) were にわか雨d with awards, with Eric Moody receiving both the Queen's Commendation for 価値のある Service in the 空気/公表する and a 始める,決める of 水晶 decanters from Lloyd's of London, the 航空機's 保険会社s.

'I suppose I did save them a couple of million 続けざまに猛撃するs,' he joked.

Captain Moody continued 飛行機で行くing 747s ― the 修理d City of Edinburgh の中で them ― before retiring at 55 after 完全にするing more than 17,000 飛行機で行くing hours.

Although some of those hours had been spent 直面するing that 小衝突 with death over Jakarta, that didn't stop him j oking about it during an interview with the 航空機による Ratings website in 2014.

'When I learnt to 飛行機で行く in the Fifties, 飛行機で行くing was dangerous and sex was 安全な,' he said. 'When I retired in the Nineties, that had gone the other way around.'

Along with the 感謝する 乗客s, he formed the Galunggung Gliding Club, an organisation which kept the 生存者s in touch with each other for many years and even produced an 予期しない romance when Betty Tootell went on to marry James Ferguson, the man who sat in 前線 of her.

'Life is 十分な of surprises,' she said of their 関係.

'That night, I learned to count every day as a 特別手当.'
