Across Britain, the number of banks has fallen from almost 15,000 in 1986 to いっそう少なく than 6,000 today. Building societies have also 直面するd a 類似の 拒絶する／低下する, 落ちるing from almost 7,000 to 1,900.

'It means that we only have one now and it is at the garage at the end of town so not very convenient and because it's so busy it often runs out of cash.

'That's 証明するd problematic for some food 商売／仕事s which operate in cash. One of the takeaways was asking people 列ing for food to do bank 移転s one evening recently because cash wasn't 利用できる.'

It is hoped that a 地位，任命する office will be 設立するd in the former Barclays building and that an ATM machine will be reinstalled at some point in the coming months.

'The Community 銀行業者s work on rotation, with a different banking provider 利用できる on each day of the week. Community 銀行業者s are usually 供給するd by the banks or building society with the most 顧客s in the 地元の area. '

To be 適格の for a community banking 中心, a town needs a 全住民 of at least 7,000 people.

But Sandy 追加するd: 'Even though there is a 穴を開ける in the 塀で囲む for a machine to go into, it will still have to go through the planning 過程, which will take a bit of time.'

Her thoughts were 確認するd by Bernard Staley, 85, a retired hill 農業者 who spent his working life managing sheep high up on the dales which surround the town.

He said: 'I'm a cash person and I think a lot of 農業者s prefer to 取引，協定 that way. You would go in every week and 雑談（する） to somebody you knew and do whatever 商売／仕事 needed doing.

'When I started farming I went in to talk to the bank 経営者／支配人 about my 商売／仕事, it's the way things were done 支援する then and that personal 接触する was useful.

'Of course it's not the way things are done now and times have changed, but I liked it the way it was.'

The 場所／位置 at 33 Market Street, just off the cobbled square in the town centre, was first occ upied in 1863 by Messrs Wakefield and Credson, さもなければ known as The Kendal Bank.

It was taken over in June 1893 by the Bank of Liverpool, becoming a 共同 with ツバメs Bank in 1918 after the start of World War One.

ツバメs went on to assume 単独の 所有権 10 years later in 1928 and the bank remained a 主要な支え of Kirkby Stephen's daily life for 41 years until the bank became part of Barclays.

The empty building is a sight that saddens retired teacher and 農業者 Catherine Coulthard, 83.

She said: 'I was born in Kirkby Stephen and for as long as I could remember there was a bank on that 場所／位置, it's very sad to see it go.

'I can do things online, my daughters made sure I knew how to do that because you have to keep up with the times, but it's no 代用品，人 for 取引，協定ing 直面する to 直面する.

'I remember as a child going into the bank to ask for advice if there was something troubling. If you went into a bank you knew there was someone there who was listening.

For half an hour the cashiers took on 処理／取引s from 顧客s, 含むing マイク Walker, in his late 70s, who runs the 地元の theatre club.

マイク said: 'I need to come to a bank to deposit the taking, you can't do that online can you?

'I'm part of Kirkby Stephen Community Arts group and we run a 月毎の cinema which we 始める，決める up in the social club.
