ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: 禁止 of fun? It will never be a 勝利者, Rishi

So what should a girl do to enjoy herself nowadays? Every week a new 調査する points out the (死傷者)数 taken on our 団体/死体s by alcohol and タバコ, the terrible twins that have been my pleasurable 主要な支えs for around 50 years.

Last week another 調査する 明らかにする/漏らすd that not only are middle- 老年の women like myself world-主要な when it comes to binge-drinking, but now in the UK even our children 老年の between ten and 13 are 主要な the pack on 実体 乱用.

Whatever way you slice the argument, there is no good news when it comes to either drink or smokes, other than the fact that they are so enjoyable. The other morning I woke, having overdone it the night before, berating myself with my usual cry of, 'Why do I do it?' But of course at the time it was fun.

The second glass of white ワイン slipped 負かす/撃墜する a 扱う/治療する before dinner, as we opened a new 瓶/封じ込める at the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する and kept topping up our glasses. Later that evening I 扱う/治療するd myself to the pre-bedtime cigarette I find hard to give up, even though I can やめる easily get through the whole of the 残り/休憩(する) of the day without them. It was all a pleasant buzzy blur ? lots of laughs and all that.

Rishi Sunak's plan to outlaw smoking for the next generation will never work, writes ALEXANDRA SHULMAN

Rishi Sunak's 計画(する) to 無法者 smoking for the next 世代 will never work, 令状s ALEXANDRA SHULMAN

According to a survey last week, it's not just middle-aged women such as myself who are heavy binge-drinkers, but children aged 10 to 13 in the UK are some of the worst offenders of substance abuse

によれば a 調査する last week, it's not just middle-老年の women such as myself who are 激しい binge-drinkers, but children 老年の 10 to 13 in the UK are some of the worst 違反者/犯罪者s of 実体 乱用

It's not hard to see why teenagers binge on six-packs and vapes if they can't buy cigarettes - prohibiting fun will never be easy to pull off

It's not hard to see why 十代の少年少女s binge on six-packs and vapes if they can't buy cigarettes - 禁じるing fun will never be 平易な to pull off

At no point did I think about how I might feel the next day. At no point did I conjure up that horrible nauseous feeling that comes with the first cup of strong coffee and which, as you get older, magnifies as the hours pass. I didn't, not for a moment, consider the likely sorry leaden 明言する/公表する of my brain when I woke.

So no wonder that our children are tempted by these 麻薬s and why 無法者ing, as Rishi Sunak wants to do with 十代の少年少女s and タバコ, will never work.

If a grown woman like me makes the stupid choice of overindulging while 存在 井戸/弁護士席 aware of the consequences, it's not difficult to see why 十代の少年少女s binge on 瓶/封じ込めるs of cheap vodka and six -packs, and sucking on vapes if they can't buy cigarettes. It's because it seems like 広大な/多数の/重要な fun to them ? and a 禁止 of fun is never going to be an 平易な one to pull off.

I'd rather have a card over an app

There I was the other day in John 吊りくさび, buying saucepans, as you do. At the next till was a 顧客 who had lost her John 吊りくさび card and 手配中の,お尋ね者 to know how to get a 交替/補充.?

There are no longer cards, she was told ? you need to get to your account by downloading the app. Is there no one I can call, she 固執するd? No, replied an implacably unhelpful jobsworth. They'll just tell you to download the app.

It's hardly surprising John Lewis is in the doldrums when it's scoring own goals such as scrapping physical loyalty cards and forcing customers to access them on an app instead

It's hardly surprising John 吊りくさび is in the doldrums when it's 得点する/非難する/20ing own goals such as scrapping physical 忠義 cards and 軍隊ing 顧客s to 接近 them on an app instead

Looking around the shop 床に打ち倒す, I saw that the median age of 顧客s was over 50. While we all know how to download apps, we don't やむを得ず want our smartphones filled with so many that we can't find them on the 審査する. We like a nice chargecard.

John 吊りくさび is in the doldrums, but with own goals like this it's hardly surprising.

Will the 静かな guru (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 the loudmouth?

Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat 範囲 is going to be 利用できる on アマゾン Fresh. You will no longer have to (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 the traffic 列 to his Cotswold farm shop to scoop up the beef jerky, rapeseed oil and salted crisps he produces.

At the same time, Yotam Ottolenghi, the successful Israeli cook we have to thank for introducing us to pomegranate molasses and rose petals in the 蓄える/店 cupboard, is 長,率いるd to the Waitrose 棚上げにするs. His jars of Ottolenghi-branded miso pesto, and rose and 保存するd lemon harissa, will be 利用できる in the next aisle to Persil.

When we buy into personality brands, it's not only the food that we are buying ? it's the 指名する on the tin. Petrolhead, millionaire loudmouth or North London's quieter culinary guru… who will be the 勝利者?

Yotam Ottolenghi's self-branded miso pesto and rose and preserved lemon harissa is heading to Waitrose stores

How a 外傷/ショック put an end to 苦悩

We had a young Ukrainian woman living with us from April 2022 until late last year. She has done brilliantly at making a life for herself in the UK, but she has felt 激しい 苦悩 much of the time.

It's no wonder, 存在 in a strange country with no friends and family to support her and worrying about family 支援する home. A few weeks ago, she 簡潔に returned for the first time to visit her home town of Dnipro. It was a depressing sight after so many months of the war and the 脅し of attack was omnipresent and 脅すing.

She's now 支援する in the UK and says the general 苦悩 she 以前 felt has all but disappeared.

Going home and living under a real 脅し seemed to 行為/法令/行動する as a mental recalibrator that 解放するd her from the unspecific but generalised 苦悩 she had been experiencing. It 支援するs up the theory that in times of 外傷/ショック such as war, there's no space for the many 解放する/自由な-floating mental health 問題/発行するs a 比較して stable society seems to 苦しむ.

A smart new take on the fashion 前線

As I showed a new piece of 着せる/賦与するing to a friend the other day, she pronounced it 'Just Smart Enough'. Love that. It's much better than Smart Casual.

Just Smart Enough means it's ideal when you want to look dressed up but not over the 最高の,を越す, because it has a little something ? in this 事例/患者 a fringed hem ? that elevates it from the everyday.

Just Smart Enough, though, is not like so many smart things that hang reproachfully in the wardrobe, so smart that you hardly ever find an occasion to wear them.

復讐 of the Aussie crocodiles

Crocodiles have gone from being so scarce in Australia that they needed protection in the 1970s, to being so numerous that they are going to need to be culled

Crocodiles have gone from 存在 so 不十分な in Australia that they needed 保護 in the 1970s, to 存在 so 非常に/多数の that they are going to need to be culled

On the beware of your wishes 前線, consider Australia's crocodile 状況/情勢.?

Once regarded as an 危うくするd 種類 after they were 追跡(する)d so much for their 肌, there were only a few thousand of them by the time 保護の 対策 were put into place in the 1970s.

Now there are so many saltwater crocodiles around, 負傷させるing and 殺人,大当り people, that they are going to have to be culled. And we thought we had it 堅い with rampaging cows.
