With Humza on his way out, who is the SNP's best bet for leader?

Humza Yousaf’s 辞職 on Monday has left the SNP again 直面するing the 仕事 of choosing a new leader, just 13 months after they last did so in the wake of Nicola Sturgeon’s shock 辞職 in February 2023.?

From the SNP’s 視野, they need someone who can help them 演説(する)/住所 two 重要な challenges.

The first is to 部隊 their own party. Once a tightly run ship, the dissenting 発言する/表明するs in the SNP have 増加するd in 最近の years around both the direction of the leadership on 明確な/細部 政策 問題/発行するs and its 戦略 ? or, as they would see it, 欠如(する) of one ? for 安全な・保証するing independence.?

They will be looking to the new leader to build 合意 and bring these dissenting 発言する/表明するs 支援する into the 倍の.

However, with a 総選挙 a certainty within the next 9 months, they also need a leader who can 控訴,上告 to the wider public.?

Pollster Rachel Ormston says the SNP faces a new dilemma ? the person best placed to help the unite the party and the person most likely to appeal to the wider public ‘may not be one and the same’

世論調査員 Rachel Ormston says the SNP 直面するs a new 窮地 ? the person best placed to help the 部隊 the party and the person most likely to 控訴,上告 to the wider public ‘may not be one and the same’

The SNP’s opinion 投票 ratings have been on the slide since Nicola Sturgeon left office, while Humza Yousaf’s personal ratings の中で the public were 終始一貫して 消極的な over his time as First 大臣.?

The party will be looking for someone who can 茎・取り除く and, ideally, 逆転する this 拒絶する/低下する to 避ける them 存在 beaten into second place by a resurgent?労働 party.

With 憶測 on the likely 競争相手s for SNP leader already reaching fever pitch in Holyrood political circles, who might be best placed to rise to these two challenges?

Ipsos fielded a 投票 in Scotland すぐに after Humza Yousaf 辞職するd, to find out what the public makes of some of the 可能性のある 走者s and riders.

Our 投票ing shows that の中で a 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 可能性のある SNP 候補者s, only Swinney and Forbes have any real 削減(する)-through with the public.?

Half of the Scottish public do not know who Jenny Gilruth, Neil Gray or M?iri McAllan are, and a third do not know who Stephen Flynn, Shona Robison or Angus Robertson are.?

Only?Kate Forbes and John Swinney are 井戸/弁護士席 enough known for the public to have formed a 見解(をとる) on them.

And the public appears to 率 them 平等に ? 37 per cent said each of them would do a good 職業 as FM, while 24 per cent and 23 per cent それぞれ said Kate Forbes and John Swinney would do a bad 職業 (the 残り/休憩(する) were either 自信のない if they would do a good or bad 職業 or were 自信のない who they were).

However, when asked to choose between the SNP 政治家,政治屋s on our 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる), Kate Forbes is the favourite の中で the public as a whole ? 26 per cent think she would make the best First 大臣, versus 20 per cent for John Swinney.?

No other 可能性のある 候補者 had more than 7 per cent of the public behind them (and 20 per cent preferred ‘非,不,無 of them’).?

Forbes also 控訴,上告s more than Swinney to those who have 投票(する)d for 野党s, and to those who 投票(する)d No in the 2014 Independence 国民投票 (though Swinney is ahead の中で 2014 Yes 投票者s).

But while Kate Forbes is ahead with the public, John Swinney is 明確に ahead with SNP 投票者s ? 30 per cent of 2021 SNP 投票者s said he would be the best First 大臣, versus 21 per cent for Kate Forbes.?

In fact, Forbes appears to divide SNP 投票者s, with 22 per cent of those who 投票(する)d for them in 2021 説 they think she would do a bad 職業 as First 大臣, versus just 10 per cent who say the same of John Swinney.

This creates a new 窮地 for the SNP ? the person best placed to help them 部隊 their party and the person most likely to 控訴,上告 to the wider public, beyond their base, may not be one and the same.

Swinney may be party favourite 'but public wants Forbes in Bute House'
