Was there a more tenacious driver? Or were many more loved by the British public?

He seemed to spend his life travelling 上りの／困難な, the nearly man who wore his heart on his sleeve. For a too-簡潔な／要約する period, before his lifestyle distracted him, 追跡（する） was the best on the grid. He died too young, 45 of a heart attack at home in Wimbledon, taking with him a cavalier spirit but leaving behind an indelible impression.

14. Sebastian Vettel

13. Graham Hill

12. Niki Lauda

A hero of sport, recognisable by the scars he 苦しむd in the 解雇する／砲火／射撃 at the Nurburgring in 1976. So disfigured was he that 肌 was taken off his thigh to 再構築する his 直面する. Yet six weeks later he returned in his Ferrari at Monza, his 負傷させるs weeping as he pulled on his balaclava.

He lit the bonfire of Italian motorsport after World War Two. Ferrari's first world 支持する／優勝者, in 1952, and again in 1953, both times dominantly. Many reckoned him to be faster than even Juan Manuel Fangio. But Moss, on balance, demurred from that 査定／評価.

Ascari 衝突，墜落d into the Monaco harbour in 1955 fighting for the lead and died a week later at Monza. Fangio said: 'I've lost my greatest 対抗者.'

10. Fernando Alonso

Does Alonso ever have an off day? He barely has an off 開会／開廷／会期. He is unerringly 一貫した and enduringly brilliant. He goes on at Aston ツバメ to his 中央の-40s, 転換ing perceptions of the possible in the modern 時代.

9. Jim Clark

His death at Hockenheim in a F2 race in 1968 激しく揺するd the 創立／基礎s of the sport, for, like Ayrton Senna a 世代 later, he had seemed invulnerable 同様に as so blisteringly 急速な／放蕩な his peers were cowed.

His 勝利，勝つ in the 1963 ベルギー Grand Prix in 注ぐing rain stands comparison with anything in the annals. Through an eight-mile course past farmhouses, 塀で囲むs, pylons and trees, he lapped the whole field.

8. Sir Jackie Stewart

An 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の 人物／姿／数字 in the history of モーター racing. In an age when death might be a corner away and drivers’ 直面するs were 熟考する／考慮するs of terror as they 用意が出来ている to race, Stewart had the ability to shut this out and keep his 長，率いる while all around him lost theirs. ‘Mind 管理／経営,’ he called it.

He fought with typical doggedness for safety 改良s, 説 that if he had let the 事柄 残り／休憩（する） he would have been a more popular 支持する／優勝者, but perhaps a dead one.

Later a grand prix 勝利者 as owner of his eponymous team, he is now an 年上の 政治家. Who else could say that the late Queen was guest of honour at his 80th birthday party?

7. Alain Prost

To watch The Professor, as he was called, sashay from corner to corner with 極小の steering input was to 証言，証人／目撃する serene 運動ing at the most rarefied level.

Stewart esteemed Prost as better than Senna, for 存在 いっそう少なく 残虐な at the wheel and for 運動ing within himself rather than on the 辛勝する／優位. Ecclestone 率d him the finest driver he ever saw until Max Verstappen （機の）カム along.

6. Sir Stirling Moss

A 国家の treasure, and the most famous sportsman in the world before Muhammad Ali started playing to 全世界の TV audiences.

5. Max Verstappen

4. Michael Schumacher

So good, he nearly killed the sport. After 肩書を与える successes at Benetton, he drove Ferrari to their first 選手権 for 21 years, the first of his five successively in red. A Maranello hero for ever.

He was loved by his team 負かす／撃墜する to the least mechanic, にもかかわらず a 評判 for Teutonic 冷淡な. He showed this by fighting his brother Ralf to 勝利，勝つ the 2003 San Marino Grand Prix with ruthless 目的 only hours after their mother died.

3. Ayrton Senna

Many acclaim him as the greatest of all time, for there was his aura 同様に as his ability. The combination, and a 競争 with Prost that defined both their careers, 原因（となる）d his home city of Sao Paulo to turn up in their millions to line the streets for the Brazilian’s last earthly 旅行.

His showpiece victory （機の）カム in the wet at Silverstone in 2008, when he finished one minute ahead, like an amphibian.
