I'm a professor, but people only care that I'm fat

UNSHRINKING

by Kate Manne??(Allen 小道/航路 £20, 320pp)

Kate Manne is an associate professor, author of two acclaimed 調書をとる/予約するs, one of Prospect magazine’s World’s 最高の,を越す 10 Thinkers and a renowned feminist philosopher. She is also fat.

Manne is fat in a world which is not designed for 団体/死体s which 越える a 確かな size. Fat people 直面する 差別 and bias in education, 雇用, and their dating and social lives.?

At times, they are literally squeezed out, e.g. seats on 計画(する)s, MRI scanners. They 直面する 医療の prejudice, even misdiagnosis. In her 医療の 公式文書,認めるs, she finds herself 減ずるd to three words: ‘she is obese’.

The mistake is to regard fatness as the problem. The world, says Manne, is the problem. It is ‘苦境に陥るd’ in fatphobia.?Rather than 需要・要求する people 縮む to a ‘normal’ size, we need to 演説(する)/住所 the social systems which 階級 fatter 団体/死体s as inferior to thinner ones.?

Fatphobia is worse if you’re 女性(の). It starts 早期に: parents are twice as likely to?google ‘is my daughter overweight?’ as they are ‘is my son’.

Kate Manne argues that the mistake is to regard fatness as the problem. The world, mired in fatphobia, is the problem

Kate Manne argues that the mistake is to regard fatness as the problem. The world, 苦境に陥るd in fatphobia, is the problem?

And it’s everywhere ― 雇うd by misogynists and women: in Sex and the City, Samantha 伸び(る)s 10lb to the horror of her friends.?In the film I Feel Pretty,?Amy Schumer’s character is ‘borderline fat’ and has 信用/信任 only after hitting her 長,率いる, ‘resulting in actual brain 損失’.

But diets do not work, 強調s Manne. They won’t make you thin. They might make you fatter. The 続けざまに猛撃するs almost invariably return, and ‘負わせる cycling’ ―losing and 回復するing 負わせる ― is counterproductive.?

Manne points to [U.S. TV show] The Biggest Loser: nearly all the contestants 回復する the 負わせる, and then some. 負わせる and metabolism, Manne 示唆するs, may even have a genetic 始める,決める point, so dieting is chasing an illusion.

国会 culture is a form of gaslighting. 証言,証人/目撃する its lies: that rice cakes are delicious; nothing tastes as good as skinny feels; it’s not a diet, it’s wellness.

To diet is to 苦しむ and Manne should know. She has tried ‘every fad diet going’, from Atkins to S outh Beach, 経由で Paleo and Low GI.?

She has 餓死するd her 団体/死体 into submission with extreme seven-day 急速な/放蕩なs and taken 疑わしい diet pills before moving on to Adderall, an appetite-抑えるing amphetamine, which she took for years. It drove her into a sleepless frenzy, 危うくするd her marriage, and left her ‘fatter than ever’.

For herein lies the rub: Manne is not happy with her 負わせる. She can tell you how much she 重さを計るd on any 重要な occasion from the age of 16 onwards: her wedding day, when her daughter was born.?

Her 治療 at the 手渡すs of いじめ(る)s is heart-breaking. The teacher who referred to her as ‘a brick house’, the words ‘fat bitch’ scrawled on her locker and 存在 投票(する)d ‘most likely to have to 支払う/賃金 for sex’.

Diet culture is a form of gaslighting. Witness its lies: that rice cakes are delicious; nothing tastes as good as skinny feels; it’s not a diet, it’s wellness

After breaking up with a 肉親,親類d, respectful boyfri end, her student days were a 荒涼とした 一連の会議、交渉/完成する of party 麻薬s, 餓死, and risky promiscuity: exploitative sex with 慣例的に attractive men in search of validation. She has felt perilously の近くに to suicidal thanks to her own internalised fatphobia.

As an academic, she worries about eating in 前線 of putative 同僚s. During publicity interviews, she hides her 団体/死体 by only appearing on ビデオ camera and using a headshot of her at her thinnest.

Philosophy is 支配するd by white men who wonder aloud of a woman: ‘If she can’t 支配(する)/統制する what she eats, how can she discipline her mind?’

Manne’s polemic is at its most 納得させるing when it is personal. 存在 fat does not equal 存在 unhealthy, she says. Of course, it is wrong to shoehorn 団体/死体s into a 狭くする idea of what a 団体/死体 should look like. Of course, everyone deserves the same 適切な時期s; not judgment and dehumanisation.

In short, other people’s fatness is 非,不,無 of your 商売/仕事.

Manne has her own happy ending. Her 肉親,親類d husband, Daniel, thinks her beautiful and they have a daughter. Manne now 辞退するs to 縮む her 団体/死体 to a いわゆる 許容できる size. Her 団体/死体 is for her.

Her clarion call is for fat people to be 解放するd. Not to diet. Not to be shamed into taking the 魔法 pill (she に例えるs 負わせる-loss 麻薬s like Ozempic to a nose 職業 for a ユダヤ人の nose or the use of 肌 lightening creams).

Fat people should eat when hungry. Fat 団体/死体s are wronged 団体/死体s, not wrong 団体/死体s. Discuss!
