After two 10年間s of 急速な/放蕩な-paced city life in London, Dublin and New York, my wife Michaela and I decided it was time to put 負かす/撃墜する roots and 緩和する up a bit.

On our first 見解(をとる)ing, we knew モミ Tree Farm in Suffolk was ideal for raising our daughters, Olivia, 14, Amelie, 13, and Ruby, 11, and so it was that five years ago we moved to the country.

Nestled in several acres with two ponds and woodland, the 17th-century farmhouse gave us the tranquillity we had longed for.?

Dashed hopes: Paul and Michaela with their daughters, Olivia, 14, Amelie, 13, and Ruby, 11, at their beautiful 田舎の 退却/保養地 in Suffolk

The Fields paid £685,000 for the house. It was valued at £900,000 before EDF made its 計画(する)s public.?A sale is unrealistic, 広い地所 スパイ/執行官s told the family, unless they 削除する the price

It is so secluded that our only 隣人s are acres of arable 農地, hares we can watch ボクシング and skies so dark that on (疑いを)晴らす nights you can see 衛星s hurtling through space like 狙撃 星/主役にするs.

We spent last year getting 許可 to 延長する the four-bedroom farmhouse and 取って代わる a dilapidated barn so we could 供給する accommodation for our parents, whose dependency on us has become more 圧力(をかける)ing.

にもかかわらず the family challenges many couples of our 世代 直面する, we knew we were very lucky. モミ Tree Farm and the lifestyle it gave us was like wearing a warm, cosy jumper on a crisp, frosty morning.

But then, last October, EDF Energy wrote to tell us it was 開始する,打ち上げるing a final 協議 on 計画(する)s to build two 核の 原子炉s at Sizewell, about eight miles from our home ― and our 所有物/資産/財産 had been identified as かもしれない 存在 影響する/感情d.

EDF wants to build a road from the A12 に向かって Sizewell. The road would go up against the 境界 between the Fields' 所有物/資産/財産 and 隣人ing 農地

I called EDF and was told curtly that letters were 存在 sent to hundreds of people.

No, they couldn't say how the Sizewell C 計画(する)s would 影響する/感情 us. Yes, we'll be 協議するd in 予定 course. No, there's no date for when that will be.

After making some 調査s, someone with knowledge of the 計画(する)s told me EDF wants to build a road from the A12 に向かって Sizewell. No other 所有物/資産/財産 would be 衝撃d as much as ours because the road would go up against the 境界 between us and 隣人ing 農地.

Michaela and I felt sick, but we decided not to tell our children until we had a clearer picture.

After making half a dozen calls to EDF for (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), I was 招待するd to a 会合 by Tom McGarry, 長,率いる of stakeholder 約束/交戦 for Sizewell C. 'We don't want your 所有物/資産/財産,' he said. 'We'll go 一連の会議、交渉/完成する it.'

The first of my interactions with EDF 始める,決める the トン for その後の ones: paucity of 詳細(に述べる) and 残酷に 冷淡な communications. Worse was to come when EDF 公然と 解放(する)d its 提案s in January.

In a field 国境ing モミ Tree Farm, 刈るs grow on rotation.

The only 汚染 is at 収穫 time, when our windowsills get a light covering of dust and we have to remember not to leave washing on the line when the 連合させる harvester is out.

The 提案s 明らかにする/漏らすd that in this field, EDF would 位置を示す a construction 構内/化合物 for 300 労働者s and 175 トラックで運ぶs a day for two years while it builds its new road.

That would start with a roundabout in the field and run for five miles に向かって Sizewell, where building two 核の 原子炉s would take ten years.

EDF 収容する/認めるs our home would 苦しむ '重要な 逆の 影響s' from noise. At the 頂点(に達する) of construction, 1,500 HGVs and 6,000 other 乗り物s would 雷鳴 past each day.

The 提案s also make (疑いを)晴らす that the 提案するd roundabout would be lit by 33ft-high lighting columns ― so no more stargazing for us. Oh, and did I について言及する the 空気/公表する 汚染 予測(する)s?

Construction would start in 2021, encompassing the period when two of our daughters would be doing A-levels and GCSEs.?

The level of disruption would make 熟考する/考慮するing and working impossible. Both Michaela, a landscape artist, and I, 以前は of the Mail and now a 科学(工学)技術 投資家 and 助言者, work from home.

The 計画(する)s we had made for our parents were 難破させるd as soon as EDF 公表する/暴露するd the road. Yet we still have a 圧力(をかける)ing need for more room.?

The last thing Michaela and I want for our daughters is the 激変 of moving from a home we love, but we 受託するd there is no 代案/選択肢.

Reluctantly, we wrote to EDF to ask them to buy us out. Given the £14 billion cost of Sizewell C, surely EDF could afford to be 同情的な to our 状況/情勢?

How foolish we were to think EDF would be fair to us. We felt we were 存在 極端に reasonable, given the 抱擁する sacrifice we were willing to make by moving.

When we got a 返答, five weeks later, EDF きっぱりと 辞退するd to acquire the 所有物/資産/財産.

Should we try to sell? We paid £685,000 for the house. It was valued at £900,000 before EDF made its 計画(する)s public. A sale is unrealistic, 広い地所 スパイ/執行官s told us, unless we 削除する the price.

We assumed there would be a 合法的な 治療(薬). 式のs, no. The first 適切な時期 to 正式に make a 補償(金) (人命などを)奪う,主張する for blight is when a 提案するd road has been 認可するd, which, in the 事例/患者 of Sizewell C, is 2021 at the earliest. Until the road gets 認可するd ― and even then there could be a long and 高くつく/犠牲の大きい 合法的な 過程 to 証明する blight ― we are stuck with a house 価値(がある) いっそう少なく than we paid for it, and which fails to 会合,会う our needs.

The feeling of having our 手渡すs tied behind our 支援する is bad enough, but this helplessness is 構内/化合物d by EDF rubbing our nose in it.

At a public 展示, I told Jim Crawford, the 事業/計画(する) developmet director, of my 失望/欲求不満 that EDF had not engaged with me about our 状況/情勢.

His PR man started laughing, as he waved his 武器 in the direction of the 陳列する,発揮する boards in the room, 説: 'What do you think this is? We are engaging with you!'

He smirked when I asked: 'Why are you laughing? There's nothing funny about the 苦悩 EDF is 原因(となる)ing my family.'

This is not a story of Nimbyism, nor is it an emotive way to make a 事例/患者 against 核の 燃料. No, after months of trying to 控訴,上告 to EDF to 扱う/治療する us 公正に/かなり, this is about how big 商売/仕事 can run roughshod over ordinary people like a 脅迫者 鎮圧するing 農地 to make way for a new road.

We've been struck by how a 選び出す/独身 event can make you feel as though the 塀で囲むs are 落ちるing in around you, and you're 権力のない to do anything to stop it.

Mr Crawford says: 'We are asking the 地元の community what they think of 計画(する)s for Sizewell C. We have met with Mr Field and other people who could 潜在的に be 影響する/感情d by Sizewell C 提案s, with the most 最近の 会合 held last week. We will take on board the feedback we receive and 供給する appropriate mitigation.'

What is the cost to the 消費者 of building Sizewell C?

Building Sizewell C also comes at a high cost to the 消費者. By 2030, around a 4半期/4分の1 of the UK's energy needs must be 設立する from new sources because 14 of our 15 存在するing 核の 原子炉s are 予定 to start の近くにing by 2025 when remaining coal-解雇する/砲火/射撃d 力/強力にする 駅/配置するs are also 始める,決める for 閉鎖するing.

In the last four months Toshiba and Hitachi have pulled the plug on new 核の 工場/植物s at Moorside in Cumbria and Wylfa in North むちの跡s, after failing to 安全な・保証する 投資. This 可能性のある 不足(高) in electricity for the UK makes a strong 事例/患者 for building Sizewell C, although the cost to the 消費者 is likely to be 注目する,もくろむ-watering.

When EDF got 是認 from the 政府 to build Hinkley Point C in Somerset, it struck a lavish 取引,協定 that locks in the price for electricity at an 索引-linked £92.50/MWh ? almost twice the cost of energy 生成するd by 勝利,勝つd 力/強力にする. It is 推定する/予想するd Sizewell C would 要求する a 類似の strike price, which could result in higher energy 法案s.

消費者s could also be 衝撃d by Sizewell C 予定 to the way EDF ーするつもりであるs to raise 投資. It has said it will look to 年金 基金s, 含むing public 部門 マリファナs, to 財政/金融 the £14 billion construction.

EDF, which lost 200,000 顧客s to 競争相手 energy 会社/堅いs last year and saw 収入s for its UK 商売/仕事 落ちる 16.5% to £691m, has been ロビーing the 政府 to consider a new form of 財政/金融ing for 核の. Known as the 規制するd 資産 base model, it means EDF would 課す a 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 on 消費者s during the construction 段階.

This could be 議論の的になる and calls are already 存在 made for the 政府 to 焦点(を合わせる) on a renewables-led energy 戦略 given the pace of 科学技術の 前進するs and the かなり lower costs of 沖合いの/海外の 勝利,勝つd. Sir John Armitt, chairman of the the 国家の 組織/基盤/下部構造 (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 said the 政府 should put the ブレーキs on 計画(する)s for a 核の new build programme, arguing that 勝利,勝つd and solar could 配達する the same capacity as 核の for the same price, with the 追加するd advantage of carrying いっそう少なく 危険.

'One thing we've all learnt is these big 核の programmes can be pretty challenging, やめる risky ? they will be to some degree on the 政府's balance sheet,' said Sir John. 'I don't think anybody's pretending you can take 今後 a new 核の 力/強力にする 駅/配置する without some form of 政府 同意して署名するing or support. 反して the 量 要求するd to subsidise renewables is continually coming 負かす/撃墜する.'

There are also serious questions about Chinese 関与 in the UK's 組織/基盤/下部構造. EDF, which lost 200,000 UK 顧客s last year, is already propped up by the Chinese 明言する/公表する-owned 中国 核の Group.

Last October, an assistant US 国務長官, Christopher Ashley Ford, explicitly 警告するd the UK against partnering with CGN, (人命などを)奪う,主張するing that the 商売/仕事 was taking 非軍事の 科学(工学)技術 and using it for 軍の 目的s. In 最近の weeks, 関心s about Huawei, the Chinese telecoms company, 誘発するd calls for the 政府 to 押し進める 支援する on closer energy 関係 with 中国.

Isabel Hilton, CEO of Chinadialogue, says the UK 開始 up 決定的な 組織/基盤/下部構造 to 中国 is unparallelled in the western world. 'No other 経済協力開発機構 country has done this. This is 戦略の 組織/基盤/下部構造, and 中国 is a partner but not an 同盟(する) in the 安全 sense. You are making a 50-year bet, not only that there will be no 論争 between the UK and 中国, but also no 論争 between 中国 and one of the UK's 同盟(する)s. It makes no 戦略の sense.'
