I'm a 私的な school teacher - should I move to a 明言する/公表する school to 利益 from the Teachers' 年金 計画/陰謀?

I work for an 独立した・無所属 school, 収入 £51,000 per year. My school is about to pull out of the Teachers' 年金 計画/陰謀 and put everyone into a 私的な 年金, the 詳細(に述べる)s of which it has not yet given us.?

I am 46 years old and have been teaching for six years. My TPS 年金 is 現在/一般に 価値(がある) £4,000.

One of the 推論する/理由s I went into teaching was because of the 年金, and planning for a 安全な・保証する 未来.?

I will probably still get the 十分な 明言する/公表する 年金 when I retire, but my wife, who 作品 part-time, will likely get only the basic 明言する/公表する 年金.?I 推定する/予想する I will have paid off our mortgage about two years before 退職.

Defined benefit: The Teachers' Pension Scheme is based on the employee's salary rather than their contributions

Defined 利益: The Teachers' 年金 計画/陰謀 is based on the 従業員's salary rather than their 出資/貢献s

The TPS is about as gold -plated as they come these days, with a 保証(人)d 量 paid for life, as …に反対するd to the defined 出資/貢献 system that 申し込む/申し出s a 限られた/立憲的な マリファナ of 退職 利益, the value of which ebbs and flows with the 株式市場.

Given the 年金 changes, I have been looking at 職業s at 明言する/公表する schools. With my experience, I could 推定する/予想する a salary of about £35,000. It would, however, keep me within the TPS.

Would I be better off sticking it out in the 独立した・無所属 school 部門 with a 私的な 年金, or sacrificing £16,000 per year to stay within the TPS??T.S

Harvey Dorset of This is Money replies:?Sacrificing a higher salary now in order in 交流 for a more comfortable income later in life is not an 平易な 決定/判定勝ち(する).

You 直面する the choice between continuing to earn £51,000 per year and joining a いっそう少なく attractive defined 出資/貢献 計画/陰謀, or taking a 30 per cent salary 削減(する) ーするために keep a gold-plated 年金 that will 支払う/賃金 you a 行う for the 残り/休憩(する) of your life.

As you know, defined 利益 計画/陰謀s are now few and far between.

What this 決定/判定勝ち(する) really comes 負かす/撃墜する to, though, is the 詳細(に述べる)s of what your defined 出資/貢献 計画/陰謀 would 申し込む/申し出 you, were you to stay in your 現在の 職業.?

While the 条件 won't be as favourable as yo ur defined 利益 計画/陰謀, there are other factors which could make it more generous than you might imagine.?

Some 雇用者s 申し込む/申し出?salary sacrifice 計画/陰謀s which 許す you to make a 年金 出資/貢献 before 税金, for example.

Retirement pot: T.S is keen to maximise his savings, especially as his wife is unlikely to qualify for the full state pension due to working part time

退職 マリファナ: T.S is keen to maximise his 貯金, 特に as his wife is ありそうもない to qualify for the 十分な 明言する/公表する 年金 予定 to working part time?

Other 雇用者s will 増加する their 出資/貢献 to match your own, meaning that you can maximise the 量 you save into your 年金.?

If you already think you will be able to 持続する your 現在の 基準 of living on £35,000, you could stay in your 現在の 役割 and コースを変える more of your salary into your 退職 貯金 - which your 雇用者 would then 追加する to.?

< p class="mol-para-with-font">Of course, another 選択 that is open to you is to consider a 役割 in an 独立した・無所属 school that 保持するs the Teachers' 年金s 計画/陰謀, and in this way make the most of a defined 利益 計画/陰謀 whilst also maximising your salary.

I asked two 専門家s for their advice on what is the best 選択 for you take ーするために 始める,決める yourself up for the 未来.?

Can you afford it? Billy Ambler warns that the difference between a state and private pension is important to consider

Can you afford it? Billy Ambler 警告するs that the difference between a 明言する/公表する and 私的な 年金 is important to consider

Billy Ambler, 独立した・無所属 財政上の 助言者 at 飛行機で行くing Colours, replies: 明確に this is a very difficult question to answer without the 十分な facts, so I can only 供給する high-level 指導/手引 at this point.

The TPS is one of the most generous 年金 手はず/準備 in the country, with the 追加するd 利益 that 付加 年金 can be bought by members in 多重のs of £250 per 年.

However, a 重要な 面 in this conundrum is whether you could afford to take a 重要な 減少(する) in salary ーするために change 職業s and remain within the TPS. Whilst a comfortable 退職 is the end-goal, 確実にするing you have enough money to live on now is an 極端に important short-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 consideration.

At this point, I cannot 査定する/(税金などを)課す the 私的な 年金 計画/陰謀 that your 現在の 雇用者 is putting into place. As such, I cannot comment on the levels of 年次の 出資/貢献s that will be made by them and you, nor can I comment on the 投資 choices that will be 利用できる through this 協定. Both of these will have a 耐えるing on how 'good' the 計画/陰謀 is.

However, I will explain how you might work out whether or not remaining in the TPS 計画/陰謀 is a good 選択 for you.??

A good place for you to start is to get an 指示,表示する物 of your likely 年金 at normal 年金 age under the TPS. This depends on which 計画/陰謀 your 利益s are in.?

For career 普通の/平均(する) 利益s, it is either your 明言する/公表する 年金 age or age 65, whichever is the later date. However, the normal 年金 age for final salary 年金s is 60 or 65, depending on when you entered pensionable service.

You would need to get an 見積(る) of what the 年金 could be, based on a combination of your TPS 年金 and the 私的な 年金 協定 from your 存在するing 雇用者.?

You then need compare this to what the 年金 could be if you changed 職業s and remained in the TPS until your normal 年金 age.

The next item to factor in is the difference in the salary from where you are 雇うd today to 退職, versus getting a 職業 which gives you continued 接近 to the TPS. As 簡潔に 輪郭(を描く)d earlier, having continued 接近 to the TPS, but at a 意味ありげに 減ずるd salary, will 衝撃 the accrual of 年金.?

The 百分率 of a £35,000 salary at 退職, versus a defined 出資/貢献 マリファナ that you've 蓄積するd on a £51,000 salary, may look やめる different ーに関して/ーの点でs of the level of income either could 供給する.

Do the sums: Ambler suggests crunching the numbers on what kind of pension each option would provide

Do the sums: Ambler 示唆するs crunching the numbers on what 肉親,親類d of 年金 each 選択 would 供給する

It is also important to consider that if you were to remain in your 存在するing 役割 with the higher salary, you could make 付加 出資/貢献s to the 年金 計画/陰謀 which would その上の 上げる your 退職 利益s.

It is possible that your 存在するing 雇用者 will 申し込む/申し出 salary sacrifice, which means that your 年金 出資/貢献s will be taken from your 甚だしい/12ダース salary and will 利益 from lower 国家の 保険 出資/貢献s 同様に as getting 十分な 税金 救済 at source.

You also 示す that your wife, who 作品 part-time, does not have any 年金 準備/条項. Another 選択 to consider would be using part of the higher s alary you would be receiving at 現在の to make 年金 出資/貢献s for her.

Finally, it's important to 耐える in mind that's it's difficult to 予報する what, or if, any 未来 changes may occur. Even 明言する/公表する 部門 年金s may not remain as attractive and generous throughout the 残りの人,物 of your working life.

As you can see, this is a コンビナート/複合体 問題/発行する - you would be best to 捜し出す advice from a 財政上の 助言者 to 決定する whether you would be better off staying with your 存在するing 雇用者 or 捜し出すing a new teaching 役割 where you could remain within the TPS, once all 詳細(に述べる)s have been 供給するd.

Stick at it: Nick Nestbitt says the reader could make more money in their current role

Stick at it: Nick Nestbitt says the reader could make more money in their 現在の 役割

Nick Nesbitt, 私的な (弁護士の)依頼人 partner at Mazars, replies: The Teacher's 年金 計画/陰謀 is one of the few remaining defined 利益 年金 計画/陰謀s 利用できる. It 申し込む/申し出s teachers a 保証(人)d 年金 at 退職, based on their 収入s throughout their career, with that 年金 in creasing through 退職.

Defined 利益 年金s are 極端に 高くつく/犠牲の大きい to operate and most 雇用者s have moved to a defined 出資/貢献 年金 model, where the 雇用者 and 従業員 与える/捧げる to an 投資するd 基金.?

At 退職 this can be used to produce an income, typically an annuity or 製図/抽選 負かす/撃墜する on the 基金.

The 重要な difference is that a defined 利益 年金 供給するs a known 未来, 反して a defined 出資/貢献 年金 and the income it 供給するs are much いっそう少なく 確かな .?

Given how 価値のある 未来 財政上の certainty is, where someone can remain in a defined 利益 position, we'd encourage them to think very carefully about moving away from that.

In this 事例/患者 the reader would need to give up a かなりの 量 of their salary to stay in the TPS. As such, it's a 事例/患者 of 重さを計るing up if they could use their higher salary in the 現在の 役割 to 生成する a 年金 that could be as good or better than the TPS 存在 lost.

?Given how 価値のある 未来 財政上の certainty is, where someone can remain in a defined 利益 position, we'd encourage them to think very carefully about moving away from that

With a 甚だしい/12ダース salary of £35,000 and a 出資/貢献 率 of, for example, 8.6 per cent, the reader would have an 効果的な 甚だしい/12ダース salary of £32,000.?

To be in the same salary position in their 現在の 役割, the reader could put £19,000 of their 現在の salary into a defined 出資/貢献 年金. This 量 may also be 上げるd if the school agreed to pass on some of its 国家の 保険 出資/貢献 and other 貯金.

Let's assume this is the 事例/患者 and the school 与える/捧げるs 10 per cent. This mea ns that if the reader remained in their 現在の 役割, they will see £24,100 saved into their defined 出資/貢献 年金 each year.

I will now turn to what they are likely to receive from each of the two 年金 選択s.?

For each year in the TPS with a £35,000 salary, the reader would 追加する £614 to their 年金. 予定 to the way the 年金 増加するs each year, this equates to £857 of 年次の 年金 income (in today's 条件) when the 年金 becomes payable at age 67.

The 重要な question here is whether the defined 出資/貢献 年金 could produce the same, or better, ーに関して/ーの点でs of 退職 income.?

The best way to look at this is how much it would cost to buy £857 per 年 of 同等(の) annuity income at age 67. Indicative 引用するs show this income can 現在/一般に be 購入(する)d for around £18,170.

This would 示唆する that there is a good chance the reader could 達成する more income in 退職 by remaining in their 現在の 役割 and 与える/捧げるing ひどく to the new defined 出資/貢献 協定.?

The above 計算/見積りs take no account of any 投資 growth, and if they could 達成する 投資 growth of, say, 2 per cent per 年 ahead of インフレーション, the 基金 could 供給する an annuity income of 概して 二塁打 that of the TPS.

However, coming 支援する to my earlier point, there is much value in having the certainty of a DB 年金.?

If this is something the reader values 高度に, they may choose the lower 給料を受けている 役割 to have such cert ainty. 自然に, we would encourage any individual in this position to take 財政上の advice before taking any 活動/戦闘.

It's also 井戸/弁護士席 価値(がある) the reader and his wife checking her 明言する/公表する 年金 記録,記録的な/記録する, as it may be 価値(がある) making voluntary 出資/貢献s if she isn't far off 十分な 明言する/公表する 年金 entitlement.
