Geothermal 力/強力にする 工場/植物 that could run 5,000 British homes to be built in Cornwall
It sounds like the 陰謀(を企てる) of a 1950s science f iction B-movie.
Within months, a team of engineers will begin to 演習 深い into the crust of the Earth in search of a new source of cheap, clean and 制限のない energy.
Their goal is to 抑えるのをやめる the natural heat that lies buried three miles under the surface of Britain - and use it to 運動 electricity-producing turbines on the surface.
If successful, the UK's first 商業の 'geothermal' 力/強力にする 駅/配置する could 勧める in an energy? 革命 and 供給する a green, reliable 代案/選択肢 to the 議論の的になる 勝利,勝つd farms (ーのために)とっておくd for the UK.
Hotting up: The 操縦する geothermal 工場/植物, hoped to 供給する 10 per cent of the UK's electricity, will be created 近づく the Eden 事業/計画(する)'s 温室s 近づく St Austell
専門家s believe there is enough 未開発の energy in the granite below Cornwall alone to 供給する a tenth of Britain's electricity.
計画(する)s for the £15million 力/強力にする 工場/植物 were 明かすd today by the Eden 事業/計画(する) 近づく St Austell, Cornwall, and geothermal 専門家s EGS Energy.
They hope it will produce up to 3 メガワットs (MW) of electricity - enough to 力/強力にする nearly 5,000 homes. A typical 勝利,勝つd turbine can produce up to 2MW, but only when the 勝利,勝つd is blowing.
The 操縦する 工場/植物 will be created 近づく the Eden 事業/計画(する)'s 広大な 温室s 近づく St Austell.
Engineers will first 演習 two boreholes around 2.5 miles into the granite that lies underneath much of Cornwall. Each 穴を開ける will 次第に減少する - and will be 24 インチs wide at the 最高の,を越す, and around nine インチs wide at its 底(に届く).
Water will be pumped 負かす/撃墜する one 井戸/弁護士席 and 軍隊d through the hot, porous granite to the 底(に届く) of the second 井戸/弁護士席 where it will return to the surface under 圧力 and at 気温s of around 150C.
At the surface, a heat exchanger will 除去する most of the heat from the water and use it to 運動 a turbine. Waste heat will be 麻薬を吸うd 直接/まっすぐに to offices, homes and the Eden 事業/計画(する)'s ドームd 温室s.
By now the water from the 井戸/弁護士席s will have 冷静な/正味のd to 50C and will be pumped 支援する into the first 井戸/弁護士席 to repeat the cycle.
Some of the electricity produced by the 力/強力にする 駅/配置する will be used to pump the water to the 底(に届く) of the 井戸/弁護士席. However, 60 to 70 per cent of the electricity created by the turbine can be sent to the 国家の grid.
Geothermal 力/強力にする was once 先触れ(する)d as the 解答 to Britain's ぼんやり現れるing energy 危機.
However, 計画(する)s to create a 網状組織 of electricity producing geothermal 工場/植物s were 鎮圧するd in the 1970s during the dash for North Sea gas and oil.
関心s over man-made 気候 change - and Britain's 的 to produce a third of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 - have reignited 利益/興味 in the 科学(工学)技術.
支持者s of geothermal 力/強力にする say it is far more reliable than 勝利,勝つd or 潮の 力/強力にする. A typical 勝利,勝つd turbine can only produce electricity for 30 per cent? of the time - and has to be shut 負かす/撃墜する if the 勝利,勝つd is too weak, or too strong.
In contrast, a geothermal 工場/植物 can run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It only has to be shut 負かす/撃墜する for 維持/整備.
Geothermal powe r is used in the centre of Southampton where hot water from 1,800 metres below the city is used to heat public buildings.
However, the Cornish 事業/計画(する) will be the first 商業の 工場/植物 有能な of producing electricity in the UK.
A 類似の 工場/植物 in Landau, Germany, 生成するs up to 3.8MW of electricity.
Guy Macpherson-認める, managing director of EGS Energy, said the 工場/植物 would be built on land no bigger than a football stadium.?
'I would hope to start 演習ing in a year and hopefully be 生成するing electricity in 2012," he said.
Tim Smit, 大統領 of the Eden 事業/計画(する), said: '力/強力にするing the Eden 事業/計画(する) 場所/位置 from a renewable source of energy is 明確に a 優先 for us and we are very pleased to have the 適切な時期 to bring our unique 見通し and 環境の 技術s to the 事業/計画(する) と一緒に EGS Energy’s experience and 技術s in 工学 geothermal systems.'
