TV Smell-O-見通し: Turn the aroma up for Nigella please

Watching Nigella will never be the same again.

Scientists are developing an astonishing gadget that 解放(する)s evocative aromas to match the images on a television or computer 審査する.< br />

The Smell-O-見通し style 装置 will send out a waft of delicious cooking smells when a television chef serves up a dish. It will 解放(する) the smell of candy floss when someone watches a home ビデオ of a fairground.

And it will even 放出する the scent of the seaside when someone looks at their holiday snaps on a computer.

The gadget is the brainchild of Japanese 研究員s who have adapted an ordinary 署名/調印する jet printer to 解放(する) 正確な doses of scent.

Although the 発明 is still at the 早期に 行う/開催する/段階s, its creators believe it could revolutionise the way we watch television or enjoy old pictures.

Scent 補助装置d movies are nothing new. The 科学(工学)技術 was tried out in the 1960 in cinemas equipped with Smell-O-見通し - a system that squirted perfume during 重要な scenes in the movie Scent of Mystery.

However, the gadget - which could 解放(する) 30 different odours - was noisy and 人気がない with film goers who complained that the smells ぐずぐず残るd too long. A 競争相手 system, called AromaRama - was 平等に 不成功の.

The new gadget is designed to 解放(する) scents more 正確に.

Dr Kenichi Okada of Keio University, Tokyo, told New Scientist: 'We are using the 署名/調印する-jet printer's ability to 排除する/(飛行機などから)緊急脱出する tiny pulses of 構成要素 to 達成する 正確な 支配(する)/統制する.'

署名/調印する jet printers work when a pulse of 現在の heats up a coil of wire and creates a 泡 that 軍隊s a small 量 of 署名/調印する 負かす/撃墜する a tube an の上に the page at high 速度(を上げる).

The Japanese team adapted a Canon printer to squirt four scents - instead of the red, green, blue and 黒人/ボイコット 署名/調印するs used in printers.

They 設立する that pulses 継続している one tenths of a second produced (n)艦隊/(a)素早いing aromas of 造幣局, grapefruit, cinnamon, lavender, apple and vanilla.

Unlike the 1960s machines, the scent from the 署名/調印する jet lasted for just two human breaths - 許すing a different smell to be 活動させる/戦時編成するd.

The team are now working on a way to link scents to pictures. If it 作品, a 選び出す/独身 署名/調印する jet machine could be used to print on paper - and 解放(する) odours, the team say.

Dr Stephen Brewster, of Glasgow University who 熟考する/考慮するs the way people use computers, said the 科学(工学)技術 could have 関わりあい/含蓄s beyond entertainment.

He 作品 on ways to give people with dementia subtle 思い出の品s that they need to take 薬/医学s or eat.

'A strong smell of food might do that but our 科学(工学)技術 is very basic - blowing a fan over a smell-infused felt,' he said. 'We need a better way of doing it.'

However, a general 目的 scent 発生させる人(物) is still many years away.

He 追加するd: "We don't yet know how to 合成 all the scents we want. There is no red-green-blue for smell - there are thousands of 構成要素s needed. You can't 合成 raspberry from chocolate.'
