150-million-year-old oyster which is ten times normal size probably 含む/封じ込めるs the world's biggest pearl - but no-one wants to open it to find out

A 145million-year-old oyster 化石 trawled up off the south coast by fishermen could 含む/封じ込める the mother of all pearls.

専門家s used 医療の MRI scanning 科学(工学)技術 to analyse the 化石 to discover if there was a rare gem inside.

And their results showed up a mysterious smooth 反対する about the size of a ゴルフ ball.

FORMED AS A DEFENCE MECHANISM

Natural pearls are formed inside the 爆撃するs of bivalve molluscs as a defence 機械装置 against a 潜在的に 脅すing irritant, such as a parasite.

The mollusc creates a pearl sac of 外部の mantle tissue 独房s and secretes the calcium carbonate and conchiolin to 調印(する) off the irritation.

Typical stimuli 含む 有機の 構成要素, parasites, or even the mollusc's own mantle tissue that has been 損失d.

The 一般的に held belief that a 穀物 of sand is the 誘発する/引き起こす is in fact rarely the 事例/患者.

This secretion 過程 is repeated many times, producing a pearl.

Natural pearls come in many 形態/調整s, with perfectly 一連の会議、交渉/完成する ones 存在 comparatively rare.

If it were 除去するd and identified as a pearl, it could be 価値(がある) many thousands of 続けざまに猛撃するs.

But 専門家s will not 調査する the contents any その上の because it would mean the 化石 would have to be destroyed.

The oyster ? which 対策 about 7in across ? remains at the Blue 暗礁 水槽 in Portsmouth, where it is kept securely and brought out only for lectures.

Lindsay Holloway, from the 水槽, said: ‘It was discovered in the 逮捕するs of a fishing boat which was dredging here in the Solent.

When the fishermen (機の)カム 支援する to port they thought it was real, but when they 選ぶd it up, cleaned it, and had a closer look they could tell it was a 化石. It had 完全に turned to 石/投石する.’

Jewellery 専門家 Geoffrey Munn said: ‘To have a pearl the size of a ゴルフ ball would be exceptional. The biggest that have been 記録,記録的な/記録するd are about half that size.’

に引き続いて news of the 発見 a company in Cheltenham called Cobalt, which 供給するs 明言する/公表する of the art scanning services to the NHS and 私的な 患者s, volunteered to ざっと目を通す the oyster to see what was inside.

'Oysters can be 老年の by 年次の growth (犯罪の)一味s on their 爆撃するs and we have counted more than 200 (犯罪の)一味s on this oyster making it an 極端に long-lived individual.

'It's 明白に a million-to-one chance that it would 含む/封じ込める anything but, if you were to go 純粋に on the dimensions of the 爆撃する then you'd be looking at a ゴルフ ball-sized pearl.'
