They may not be as large or deadly as a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but 古代の insects are just as fascinating and tell scientists a lot about the 古代の and modern worlds ? and even the 未来 of our 惑星.

A new 調書をとる／予約する showcases the diverse array of fossilised insects, which have been discovered across the globe.

（警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） about the insects and how they have been painstakingly 保存するd, has been collated in a colourful 調書をとる／予約する by Dr David Penney and Dr James Jepson.

Like the mosquito in Jurassic Park, many of the hundreds of thousands of 見本／標本s of 古代の insect have been 保存するd in amber.

Dr Penney of the University of Manchester has used new methods and cutting-辛勝する／優位 科学（工学）技術 to 熟考する／考慮する the fossilised 見本／標本s.

‘Insects are the most diverse group of creatures on the 惑星 today and many of them were around even before the time of the dinosaurs,’ he said.

‘Bringing together entomology and palaeontology through the 熟考する／考慮する of insect 化石s has 広大な／多数の／重要な 可能性のある for revolutionising what we know about both 支配するs.’

詳細（に述べる）s of their intricate 団体／死体s were brought to life by artist Richard Bizley, who created seven 再建s of each of the m ajor periods from the Devonian to the Tertiary, between 417 and 2.5million years ago.

To make the animals in his 絵s look 現実主義の, Mr Bizley created models using 科学の 製図／抽選s and pictures of 化石s. He then photographed them to see how the light behaved.

‘When 再建するing 化石 insect 種類, special attention needs to be paid to important diagnostic features, such as the wing venation patterns and the 親族 lengths of appendage segments,’ he said.

‘The fact that many 化石 insect 種類 are known only from 孤立するd wings 提起する／ポーズをとるd 付加 problems.

‘This is where the 共同 with 専門家s became very useful and I worked closely with Dr Penney to produce an 正確な 再建 based on the comparative 熟考する／考慮する of both 化石 and living insects.’

The artist also 明らかにする／漏らすd that 工場／植物s can be difficult to paint 正確に, as 専門家s are 自信のない how 確かな 種類 looked.

‘It is rare to get a 化石 of a whole 工場／植物, so I had to paint によれば the best estimation of how they looked, using the 証拠 利用できる,’ he explained.

‘Fortunately, scientists have learnt enough to 供給する some good ideas and many living 工場／植物s are closely 関係のある to those that have become extinct.’

While Jurassic Park remains a fantasy for now, Dr Penney believes the 調書をとる／予約する and the film 誘発するd more 研究 on 化石 insects.

Dr Penney said: ‘This is the first 調書をとる／予約する to 合併する these two disciplines in an accessible way, using plain and simple language. It is a 調書をとる／予約する for anyone with a passion for palaeontology and/or entomology.’

化石 Insects, An Introduction to Palaeoentomology by Dr Penney and Mr Jepson will be published at the end of the month.
