But a new 分析 shows the movement is おもに 存在 driven by it 崩壊(する)ing under its own 負わせる - a 現象 known as 'gravitational 不安定'.

This has 原因(となる)d one of the 味方するs of the 悪名高い mountain on the east coast of Sicily to 弱める, 増加するing the 危険 of a 破滅的な 高潮,津波.

以前 it had been assumed the 溶岩 泡ing inside was the root 原因(となる) of the 火山's movement.

Dr Morelia Urlaub, of the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean 研究 in Germany, said: 'This movement is important to 熟考する/考慮する as it could lead to a 壊滅的な 崩壊(する) of the 火山.

'The results of this 熟考する/考慮する 示唆する Etna's 側面に位置する movement in fact 提起する/ポーズをとるs a greater hazard than 以前 thought.'

The findings published in the 定期刊行物 Science 前進するs is based on the first such 沖合いの/海外の movement 監視するing of the 火山.

安定性のない 側面に位置するs, or 味方するs of a 火山, 提起する/ポーズをとる a 著名な 脅し to societies when in or 近づく water.

Dr Urlaub said a 崩壊(する) 'could lead to a 津波'.

She said: '開始する Etna is a really big 火山, more than 3,300 metres [10,800ft], and the 溶岩 is making it grow bigger all the time.

'So its own 負わせる is 原因(となる)ing the 側面に位置するs to spread outwards into all directions and this is what we mean with gravitational 不安定.'

She said a large 部分 of the south eastern 味方する of 開始する Etna is 'continuously slipping into the sea.'

Previous 熟考する/考慮するs have 示唆するd this is 予定 to it 存在 押し進めるd laterally by rising magma.

But the 最終的な 原因(となる) had been a mystery as 地質学の 過程s that occur beneath the 海底 are hard to stu dy.

So From April 2016 to July 2017, Dr Urlaub and 同僚s 始める,決める up a system to 監視する 排水(気)量s on both 味方するs of the 潜水するd southern 境界 of 開始する Etna.

It was based on acoustic 科学(工学)技術 that fitted sensors to underwater transponders to (悪事,秘密などを)発見する changes in sea 圧力.

Dr Urlaub explained: 'The 原則 behind the 科学(工学)技術 is really simple. We cannot use GPS or other 衛星-based 測定s in the ocean 予定 to the high absorbance of electromagnetic waves in water.

'So we use sound waves, which 作品 really 井戸/弁護士席 in water. We placed a 網状組織 of five transponders on the seafloor and they were sending acoustic signals to each other.

'Because we know the 速度(を上げる) of sound in water, we can 変える the time-of-flight of the acoustic signal between transponders into distances.

'When the distances between the transponder change, then the seafloor has moved.'

This 観察 corresponded with a 地質学の 現象 called an aseismic fault 動議 in the 地域.

This is a 転換 that happens in the absence of an 地震 - and lasted for eight days.

Dr Urlaub said it shows the movement of the 沖合いの/海外の 火山の 側面に位置する is episodic - as …に反対するd to 存在 a seismic 決裂.

The deformation 増加するd away from the magmatic system, 示唆するing the 本体,大部分/ばら積みの of 開始する Etna's continuous deformation is 存在 driven by gravity.

Sicily is home to more than five million people - making it one of the most 密集して 居住させるd islands in the Mediterranean.

Dr Urlaub said there are no 調印するs they are under 即座の 脅し but 火山s can '崩壊(する) catastrophically' - as has happened around Hawaii and the Canary Islands.

She said: 'So Etna's 事情に応じて変わる 側面に位置する could maybe lead to 崩壊(する), but if that happens on human timescales? We don't know.

'But it is important to be aware of this 可能性のある danger so that we can keep an 注目する,もくろむ on the 側面に位置する movements.'

Earlier this year a UK 熟考する/考慮する by the Open University 設立する 開始する Etna 辛勝する/優位ing in the direction of the Mediterranean at a 率 of 14mm per year.

They said the 状況/情勢 will need careful 監視するing because it may lead to 増加するd hazards at Etna in the 未来.
