PATRICK MARMION on Sarah Jessica Parker's 勝利を得た West End 行う/開催する/段階 debut in Plaza 控訴: Mr and Mrs SJP are frisky fun in this (expensive) first-class 控訴
You want showbiz? You want celebrity? You want reassuringly expensive A-lister stardust?
Here it comes in the 形態/調整 of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, with their 攻撃する,衝突する Broadway 生産/産物 of Neil Simon's Sixties comedy about marriages teetering on the brink in a New York hotel room.
I wondered if the real-life Parker-Broderick married couple ? best known on 審査する for Sex And The City and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (の中で others) ? might 証明する too grand for the roar of the grease paint and the smell of a (人が)群がる.?
And make no mistake, Simon's play is a taut, 需要・要求するing work 要求するing the 二人組 to play a trio of different comic 役割s and keep an audience chuckling for two hours and 40 minutes straight.
But most interestingly, in a play about the vicissitudes of love and marriage, this showbiz 力/強力にする couple 必然的に put their own union centre-行う/開催する/段階. There's no way they could get through this play without 調査(する)ing their own hang-ups.
Dressed for Ladies Day at Ascot: Sarah Jessica Parker in Plaza 控訴
二塁打 行為/法令/行動する: Matthew Broderick with wife Sarah Jessica Parker
Checking in: Matthew Broderick in the 攻撃する,衝突する Bro adway 生産/産物 of Neil Simon's Sixties comedy about marriages teetering on the brink in a New York hotel room
And yet where there's angst there's laughs, and Simon's wit blows fresh 空気/公表する through any 不確定s we may feel.
Mrs Broderick opens the batting as scatty, 郊外の New Yorker Karen, who's 調書をとる/予約するd Manhattan's fanciest hotel to 生き返らせる her marriage to Mr Parker's portly and vain 実業家 Sam, who she 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うs of having an 事件/事情/状勢.?
He is an amusingly tweedy, monosyllabic mood-Hoover, who very nearly sucks the life out of the 行う/開催する/段階 in an overlong first half.
But unlike self-吸収するd Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City, there's no condescension about SJP. She is a loveable, chirpy, 橋(渡しをする)-building chatterbox eager to open シャンペン酒 and slip into a negligee.
Playing a fiftysomething couple is plausible for two actors now both around 60, but they ride their luck in the second 行為/法令/行動する as former high-school sweethearts hooking up 17 years later, 厚い Sixties wigs arguably making them look even older.
Shops and the city: SJP opens the batting as scatty, 郊外の New Yorker Karen, who's 調書をとる/予約するd Manhattan's fanciest hotel to 生き返らせる her marriage to Mr Parker's portly and vain 実業家 Sam, who she 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うs of having an 事件/事情/状勢
They are, however, giddy and playful enough to carry it off ? she as a jittery mum from out of town in a short 幻覚的な print dress, and he a rueful Hollywood 生産者 in a lurid combo of check trousers, blue polo neck and orange jacket.
Their piece de 抵抗, though, is the final scene as a society couple whose daughter has locked herself in the loo on her wedding day. SJP looks dressed for Ladies Day at Ascot, while MB turns out looking like a frazzled Norman Lamont, just out of bed in a morning 控訴.
Although SJP 成し遂げるs comic 体操 of her own, Broderick covers most of the physical comedy, 含むing getting stuck in a window でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる while 投機・賭けるing の上に a seventh-床に打ち倒す ledge.
With a few tickets 小売ing at an 注目する,もくろむ-watering £300 (decent seats are £75-125 and good ones £200), it's pulling a 顕著に 井戸/弁護士席-heeled (人が)群がる ? TV favourite Hannah Waddingham was の中で the guests at the 祝祭 業績/成果 last night.
And I'm not sure who's stooping lower with the Moet & Chandon vending machines ? the 生産者s, the punters or the ワイン-製造者s. But John Benjamin Hickey's 生産/産物 doesn't scrimp on the 行う/開催する/段階 始める,決める.?
It's a monster of stately New England chintz. Think crusty gold panelling, 200lb 3倍になる-lined curtains and a r ococo bedhead worthy of a 大統領の 控訴.
They say chintz is coming 支援する into fashion, but it's still a わずかに frumpy, frowning spectacle. However, frisky 業績/成果s lighten the visual 負担 and 解除する the spirits. Whether that 正当化するs the admission price, gentle reader, only you can tell.?
But it's a 最高の,を越す-of-the-範囲 復活 of a comic antique. All you need, ladies, is a Mr Big who will not flinch at the price tag ? which is a good 実験(する) of his character too.
