  • A 投票 of 12,000 UK 運転者s 設立する that 82% would prefer a spare wheel
  • Over a third don't feel comfortable using tyre インフレーション 道具s, which often fail
  • Just 3% of new cars in showrooms today have a spare - we explain the 推論する/理由s why 製造業者s are steering away from them

Britain's 運転者s are calling for car 製造業者s to bring 支援する spare wheels after a 投票 明らかにする/漏らすd that few have 約束 in tyre 修理 道具s in the 大多数 of new models 存在 able to 直す/買収する,八百長をする a 穴をあける.

Over four in five drivers say they would prefer to have a spare wheel in their boot rather than a tyre インフレーション 道具, a 調査する of 11,959 AA members 明らかにする/漏らすd.

However, a 最近の 熟考する/考慮する exposed that only 3 per cent of new 乗り物s sold in British showrooms today have a spare as 基準. Here's the 推論する/理由 why...?

More than four in five drivers want car manufacturers to ditch tyre inflation kits and bring back the traditional spare wheel, a new AA study has revealed

More than four in five drivers want car 製造業者s to 溝へはまらせる/不時着する tyre インフレーション 道具s and bring 支援する the 伝統的な spare wheel, a new AA 熟考する/考慮する has 明らかにする/漏らすd?

With pothole-関係のある 出来事/事件s on Britain’s roads at a five-year high, the 事例/患者 for having a spare wheel in the boot of your car has rarely been stronger, the AA says.

Last year, pothole-関係のある 損失 accounted for almost half a billion 続けざまに猛撃するs in 乗り物 修理 法案s, with a large 部分 of that spend going on tyres.

But the モーターing group 警告するs that many drivers are blissfully unaware that their car doesn't have a spare wheel tucked away under the boot 床に打ち倒す.

によれば the 調査する, one in five (20 per cent) of 18-to-24-year-olds wouldn’t think to check if the car they were buying had a spare.?

Often, many only realise they don't have either a 十分な-size or space-saver spare in the 支援する when they get a 穴をあける and want to get 支援する on the road again.

Instead, almost all new cars on sale in showrooms today come as 基準 with a 穴をあける インフレーション 道具 - usually consisting of a can of sealant to pump into the tyr e and a small compressor to blow it 支援する up.

A 熟考する/考慮する 行為/行うd by the RAC in November 設立する that より小数の than 3 per cent of new models now have a spare in the boot.

It reviewed 313 new cars on sale -?範囲ing from the smallest superminis to the largest 4X4s - and 設立する that only eight (2.6 per cent) come factory-fitted with a 支援する-up wheel in the 支援する.

The 決裂/故障 援助 provider said last year that this 欠如(する) if spare wheels is 原因(となる)ing a '劇の' rise in the number of 出来事/事件s where drivers need help in the event of an unrepairable flat tyre.

RAC patrols went out to nearly 200,000 callouts in 2022 where drivers had a 穴をあける and no spare wheel, up from 165,000 in 2018, it said.

The RAC 熟考する/考慮する also 設立する that it is predominantly larger, heaver-義務 乗り物s that come with a spare wheel, meaning the 広大な 大多数 of family-friendly cars won't have them as 基準.

The only car models identified as having a spare wheel as 基準 were the Fiat Tipo, Ford 焦点(を合わせる) (selected variants), Hyundai Sante Fe (PHEV), Land Rover Defender, Seat Ateca (selected variants), Suzuki Across, Volvo XC90 (not PHEV) and Toyota Land 巡洋艦.?

Market analysis by the RAC last year found that just 3% of new cars sold in Britain come with a spare wheel as standard. Most of these are large SUV models, it said

Why are car 製造者s steering away from spare wheels??

Many 製造業者s have stopped 含むing them as 基準 to 減ずる the 負わせる of their cars by up to 20kg.

This makes the 乗り物s more 燃料 efficient but also helps car 製造者s to 会合,会う tougher 放出/発行s 法律制定.

Tyre 修理 道具s are also far cheaper to 申し込む/申し出 as 基準 器具/備品 in cars, meaning 製造業者s can save money on each model they sell by not 申し込む/申し出ing it with a spare in the boot or under the chassis.

The RAC said spare wheels are 始める,決める to 転換 from an 危うくするd 種類 to the extinct 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) because of the arrival of electric 乗り物s.

In many 事例/患者s, their large 殴打/砲列 packs (問題を)取り上げる the space where a spare would 伝統的に be 任命する/導入するd, meaning ergonomically there isn't room to have one.

What is a car tyre 修理/インフレーション 道具 and how do they work??

A 修理 道具 consists of a can of sealant that's sprayed into the tyre 経由で the 弁 and a compressor that can be connected to a 12-volt socket in the car and used to reinflate the 損失d tyre.?

The car needs to be driven soon after the tyre has been filled with sealant so that the liquid can spread around the inside and plug any 穴を開けるs in the rubber.

The biggest 利益 of these 道具s - in theory - is that they're designed to enable 運転者s to continue a 旅行 without the hassle of changing a wheel.?

Once the tyre has been reinflated, most 示唆する you can 運動 with it fitted for around 300 miles.

However, 研究 shows?the sealant won’t work for one in every five 穴をあけるs, if the 穴を開ける is more than 5mm in 直径 or in the tyre’s sidewall.

Also, the 修理d tyre will deflate a day or so after the sealant has been?used if it doesn’t plug the 穴を開ける 完全に. And even in any 事例/患者, it’s still only a 一時的な 直す/買収する,八百長をする.

Sealant can also 妨げる the tyre from 存在 適切に 修理d. This could 押し進める up the cost of 解決するing a 穴をあける from いっそう少なく than £20 for a tyre 修理 and wheel balancing to hundreds of 続けざまに猛撃するs for a new 交替/補充 tyre.

To 避ける this expens e, use only water-based sealant, because this can be rinsed out of the tyre later.

Spending £200 on an optional spare wheel is 価値(がある) it

The AA says more drivers could have spare tyres fitted to their new cars if they 追加するd them as an 選択 when ordering in showrooms.

While a salesman might not always make (疑いを)晴らす one is 利用できる, 顧客s should always ask the 売買業者 if they can have a spare 追加するd.?

This usually costs in the 地域 of £100 to £200.?

For a new VW ゴルフ, for instance, the 新規加入 of a space saver costs £110, while Ford 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s 顧客s £200 to have on in its?best-selling Puma.

The AA says that if more drivers were aware they could 追加する a spare to their 乗り物 when 購入(する)ing, it?would 大いに help 減ずる the number of occasions where drivers find themselves 立ち往生させるd at the 味方する of the road after finding the tyre インフレーション 道具 has failed, resulting in them calling for help.

Half of the 調査する’s 回答者/被告s (49 per cent) said that they’d be willing to 支払う/賃金 to have a spare wheel 道具 placed in their luggage area, and would welcome the peace of mind that comes with the 購入(する).?

類似して, over a third (35 per cent) said that they would hesitate to buy a car if it didn’t come with a spare - and the same 割合 also don't feel 確信して using a tyre インフレーション 道具.

Last year, more than half of the 乗り物s that The AA …に出席するd with 穴をあけるd tyres, didn’t carry a spare wheel, and even though AA patrols were able to carry out a 一時的な 修理 to some of these tyres at the 道端, many 要求するd an 即座の visit to the garage.

Chris 支持を得ようと努めるd, AA Patrol of the Year, said: 'The 条件 of Britain’s potholed roads is 主要な to lots of 損失d tyres.?

'In previous times, if a 乗り物 苦しむd a 穴をあけるd tyre, our patrols would 簡単に fit the spare wheel and wave the member on their way.?

'More recently, since 製造業者s 選ぶd to fit an インフレーション 道具 instead of a spare wheel, it can take our patrols a couple of hours to 解決する the same 問題/発行する.

'Most of the members we …に出席する say that they’d much prefer the peace of mind of having a spare wheel in the boot, even if they had to 支払う/賃金 extra for it. As a result, we are seeing spare tyre 道具s become more accessible online.'

Chris 追加するs: 'Our advice is for all drivers to check if their 乗り物 has a sp are wheel before they need it, and if they find that their 乗り物 doesn’t have one, to have a 計画(する) in place if things go wrong.?

'If they do find a spare wheel in the boot, we’d 勧める them to check that it is serviceable, if they’re not sure how to do this, most garages are happy to help.'

The AA's Multi-Fit spare wheel design

The AA's Multi-Fit spare wheel design

Both the RAC and its biggest 競争相手, the AA, have their own 解答s for drivers who get a 穴をあける but don't have a spare wheel.

Patrol 乗り物s for both 会社/堅いs carry their own '全世界の/万国共通の' or?'multi-fit' spare wheels それぞれ.

These have the 柔軟性 of 変化させるing wheel sizes, designs and fitments so they can be fitted to the 広大な 大多数 of models sold in Britain today.??

This spare wheel can be fitted to a car with a 穴をあける at the 道端, 許すing the driver to continue their 旅行 while visiting a garage en 大勝する to have their tyre 直す/買収する,八百長をするd or 取って代わるd.

The multi-fit space saver can be left at the garage and collected by a passing patrol at a later date.?
