Are 保険会社s trying to 運動 over-70s off the road - older drivers 攻撃する,衝突する by vicious price 引き上げ(る)s

  • 65% of drivers 老年の 65 and over have seen モーターing costs spiral over past year

For many 年輩の people, 特に those who live in 田舎の communities, a car is a necessity.

It’s their one reliable 関係 to the outside world, enabling them to shop and see family and friends ― invaluable for their independence at a time when most public 輸送(する) is not fit for 目的.

Yet running a car for the over-65s ― and 特に the over 70s ― is becoming prohibitively expensive, as a major 調査する into モーターing costs published today by comparison website 混乱させるd.com 確認するs.

排除的 data 供給するd to Money Mail and This is Money shows that 65 per cent of drivers 老年の 65 and over have seen モーターing costs spiral over the past year; 13 per cent have considered selling their car; while 31 per cent have 削減(する) 負かす/撃墜する on 運動ing to 減ずる 燃料 costs.

Insurance squeeze: Some?65% of drivers aged 65 and over have seen motoring costs spiral over the past year

保険 squeeze: Some?65% of drivers 老年の 65 and over have seen モーターing costs spiral over the past year

A combination of high 燃料 prices, 急に上がるing car 修理 costs and ever-増加するing ro 広告 税金 and MOT costs are to 非難する ― as are the wider use by cash-strapped 会議s of congestion 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s and 刑罰,罰則s for cars that fail to 会合,会う 堅い, new 放出/発行 基準s.?

Given the parlous 明言する/公表する of most 会議s’ 財政/金融s, these ‘ultra-low 放出/発行 zones’ and ‘clean 空気/公表する zones’ are going to spread like 無分別なs in the coming years, 侵略するing not just cities but our towns and villages.

But the biggest 財政上の 頭痛 for 年輩の drivers is the 急に上がるing cost of 保険.?

Although 普通の/平均(する) car 賞与金s for the typical driver are now approaching £1,000 a year, and rising at an インフレーション-破産した/(警察が)手入れするing 年次の 率 of 58 per cent, the over-70s are 存在 攻撃する,衝突する 特に hard.

Many in this age group are receiving four-人物/姿/数字 再開 賞与金s ― in some instances a 二塁打ing or trebling in cost on the year before.

Others are 存在 突然の told by their 保険会社 that cover will not be 新たにするd. As a result, they must look どこかよそで.?

The 保険会社 doesn’t have to explain why they are 存在 jettisoned, although it will often advise ex-communicated policyholders on how they can get 代案/選択肢 cover.

Some 年輩の people, as 混乱させるd.com 確認するs, have had no choice but to give up 運動ing earlier than they 手配中の,お尋ね者 to. They have やめる literally been 押し進めるd off the road.

Understandably, many over-70s feel victimised and hundreds have 接触するd Money Mail since the start of the year to tell us so.

In short, they are 血まみれの angry and believe they are 存在 差別するd against ― and pigeon-穴を開けるd by 保険会社s as doddery drivers, when nothing could be その上の from the truth. They argue that they are 存在 迫害するd, 犠牲者s of an 保険 witch 追跡(する).

Typical grumpy 勝利者 Meldrews? No way. Nearly all these drivers, some 井戸/弁護士席 into their 80s, have unblemished 運動ing 記録,記録的な/記録するs going 支援する many years ― although a few have had the misfortune to be 伴う/関わるd in a no-fault (人命などを)奪う,主張する: an 事故 where their car has been 攻撃する,衝突する, either while parked or from behind in traffic, and they are blameless.

Some of them even drove professionally before they retired (for example, for the police) and passed 前進するd 運転者 exams, instilling in them good 運動ing habits that have never left them.

They have done 絶対 nothing wrong. Their only 罪,犯罪, as far as the 保険 産業 is 関心d, is that they are みなすd 年輩の ― and are of an age (over 70) where the data 示すs they 生成する 普通の/平均(する) (人命などを)奪う,主張するs higher than all age groups other than the under-30s.

Soaring costs: Average car premiums for the typical driver are now approaching £1,000 a year, and rising at an inflation-busting annual rate of 58%

急に上がるing costs: 普通の/平均(する) car 賞与金s for the typical driver are now approaching £1,000 a year, and rising at an インフレーション-破産した/(警察が)手入れするing 年次の 率 of 58%

The data, however, is not 全く 納得させるing. The 最新の (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), from the 協会 of British 保険会社s, shows that the size of 普通の/平均(する) モーター (人命などを)奪う,主張する by age group is highest の中で the under-20s and those 老年の 86 to 90 ― より勝るing £5,000.

But in defence of the over-70s, their propensity to (人命などを)奪う,主張する is lower than for all younger age groups.?

Also, the number of 死傷者s (killed or 本気で 負傷させるd) 伴う/関わるing drivers over-70 has fallen はっきりと ― by 51 per cent between 2004 and 2021.

Not 圧倒的な 証拠, I would 結論する, for the 保険 産業 to price 差別する against this age group.?

But 保険会社s are in 利益(をあげる)-再構築するing 方式 and have decided that 年輩の drivers are 平易な 的s. They have also turned the screw on the 年輩の by 偉業/利用するing new 支配するs designed to 確実にする loyal 顧客s are not ripped off.

Rather than 運動ing 負かす/撃墜する prices for these 顧客s, which was the 意向 of the 支配するs introduced by the 財政上の C onduct 当局 at the beginning of 2022, the 保険会社s have 簡単に ratcheted up prices across the board. 忠義 刑罰,罰則s may no longer 適用する, but prices have 発射 up.

証拠 of the 差別 against the 年輩の is everywhere. Take, for example, Des Rogers, a 77-year-old 顧問 for a 地元の coach and bus company in Birmingham.

Des, married for 54 years, has had a 十分な 運動ing licence for 59 years and has been licensed to 運動 almost all types of 乗り物s during his working life, 含むing articulated lorries.

To this day, he still 持つ/拘留するs a licence to 運動 二塁打-decker buses and coaches. His last 事故 was more than 20 years ago.

This year, his 年次の モーター 保険 with Flow (part of Liverpool Victoria General 保険 Group) for the Audi 6 he 運動s 増加するd from a little over £600 to £985.

Rather narked by the 65 per cent- 加える 増加する, he decided to shop around, only to discover that most other 保険会社s weren’t 利益/興味d in him (they 拒絶する/低下するd to 引用する), while those who were 用意が出来ている to 申し込む/申し出 him cover 手配中の,お尋ね者 up to £4,000 for an 年次の 賞与金. He stuck with Flow.

His 治療 by 保険会社s rankles him. ‘They make me feel old,’ he says.

Price hikes: Insurers have also turned the screw on the elderly by exploiting new rules designed to ensure loyal customers are not ripped off

Price 引き上げ(る)s: 保険会社s have also turned the screw on the 年輩の by 偉業/利用するing new 支配するs designed to 確実にする loyal 顧客s are not ripped off

‘It’s as if they are やめる happy 解任するing my 記録,記録的な/記録する as an 模範的な driver with 資格s ― and 軍隊ing me to 支払う/賃金 for the mistakes of other 運転者s who may be a 類似の age to myself. It’s so 不公平な.’ (Des is a fellow of the 借り切る/憲章d 学校/設ける of 兵たん業務 and 輸送(する).)

フランs Susskind feels 類似して aggrieved. Now 74, the retired teacher from Hove, East Sussex, has been 運動ing 範囲 Rovers for more than 30 years.?

During that time, she has never had an 事故 and 述べるs herself as a ‘good and careful driver’.

For the past 15 years, フランs has been insured with Saga, a company specialising in catering for the over-50s.

‘I 運動 about five times a week,’ she says, ‘and I was やめる happy to 新たにする every year, even when the price went up.’

But she was told by Saga that it no longer 手配中の,お尋ね者 her.

‘I was shocked,’ she says. ‘After all, this is a company that is meant to look after people of my age. When I challenged the 決定/判定勝ち(する), it said that it couldn’t find an underwriter to insure me.’

She 追加するs: ‘I have no health 問題/発行するs, take no pills apart from statins, play tennis three times a week and I am in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of all my faculties. I feel rather cross. Is it the car I 運動? Is it me? And why insure me for 15 years and then 封鎖する me?’

These are questions which Saga has not answered and will not answer, although it should do given the 忠義 フランs has shown it ― and the 利益(をあげる)s it has made from her.

Thankfu lly, she has moved on and 設立する 代案/選択肢 cover with the AA, but her experience, and that of Des, begs the question: is it 権利 for 保険会社s to 差別する against the 年輩の?

Of course it isn’t, although the 保険 産業 has somehow managed to 免除された itself from age 差別 支配するs because of the 統計(学) I 以前 引用するd ― 示唆するing a tenuous link between 前進するing age and greater 危険.

Is the 保険 産業 doing anything to help 年輩の drivers stay on the road ― drivers, incidentally, who must 新たにする their 運動ing licence every three years after hitting 70, in the 過程 宣言するing any 医療の 条件s that may impair their 運動ing 技術s?

Yes. Some providers are now 申し込む/申し出ing cover based on how many miles policyholders 運動.

It is an 選択 which some low-mileage 年輩の drivers are using ― and it is working for them. They agree an 年次の mileage 限界, 支払う/賃金 an upfront 賞与金, and a 装置 plugged into the car’s computer 報告(する)/憶測s their 月毎の mileage 支援する to the 保険会社.

If they 越える their mileage 限界, they 支払う/賃金 a per-mile 罰金 (usually, no more than 10 pence a mile). 平等に, for every mile under the 限界, the 運転者 gets a refund.

保険会社s are also 延長するing the use of telematics outside of the 伝統的な young drivers’ market and into the 年輩の 部門.

For example, Aviva is now 申し込む/申し出ing anyone who buys its cover through a comparison website the chance to enrol in the ‘MyDrive’ feature 経由で its app.

This then 監視するs their 運動ing habits through their smartphone and 供給するs 現在進行中の 指導/手引 to help them to 運動 安全に.

Using telematics, the app 評価するs a driver’s 加速するing, ブレーキing, cornering, 速度(を上げる), and phone usage, such as taking calls or choosing music on the ir 装置.

At 再開, those who are みなすd to have driven 安全に will receive a 割引.

Aviva says 18 per cent of its app 使用者s are retired, 示唆するing they are willing to give MyDrive a go.

The final word goes to 85-year-old Hugh Colin Penfold, a former officer in the 主要都市の Police who learnt how to 扱う a car at the Met Police 運動ing School in Hendon, North-West London. The 技術s learnt on that course have stuck with him ― and he has never had an 事故.

He believes the 年輩の should be 許すd to go on courses and 証明する their roadworthiness. This (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) would then be considered when they look for car 保険.

‘Many 年輩の drivers have lost their 発言する/表明する 簡単に because of their age,’ he says.

‘But they should not be 押し進めるd off the road as a result of sky-high 保険 costs.’ 絶対.
