Sir Ranulph Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes OBE, third baronet of Banbury - Ran, to his friends - was born in Glasgow in 1944. He served in the 王室の Scots Greys before secondment to the SAS, where he saw 戦闘 in the Dhofar 反乱, and later called on 同僚s to lead the first team to reach both 政治家s by land in 1979-82.

A 2000 試みる/企てる to walk 単独の to the North 政治家 ended when he had to 救助(する) his sled from 氷点の water, losing several fingers to frostbite. In 2003 he ran seven マラソンs in seven days after a heart attack and 二塁打 bypass.

In 2009 he became the oldest Briton to have climbed エベレスト. He lives on Exmoor with second wife Louise and daughter Elizabeth.

I would never 雇う a wimp.

You need 確かな elements in your team: the spirit of adventure, 開拓するing personalities, entrepreneurship. Team members are almost certainly going to come across 障害s, and unless they've got a depth of 決意, the wimpish 発言する/表明する in their 長,率いるs is going to 示唆する that they take the 平易な way out. The 選択 過程 of the team is 決定的な in weeding out wimps, because if you're climbing a mountain and they 凍結する up, it's very difficult to get them to 雪解け. That's 平等に true in 商売/仕事. It takes a 決定するd person to 需要・要求する strength from his team in that 状況/情勢 - look at the banks last year, look at 政府s and 政治家,政治屋s. Some of them will be able to get through the bad times, some are 運命にあるd not to.

Ruthlessness runs in my family.

I wouldn't want to (人命などを)奪う,主張する any 関係 between what success I've had and my 41 世代s of forefathers going 支援する to the year 715. One bloke was the leader of the First Crusade and under his leadership they 再度捕まえるd Jerusalem. He ordered the 大虐殺 of 42,000 human 存在s in one night, 含むing women and children. So one isn't 完全に proud of all of them. Another committed 姦通 with the Queen and was locked up in the Tower by her husband, Edward II. He escaped by night, abseiling into the Thames, and subsequently had Edward II locked up and paid somebody to put a red-hot poker... 井戸/弁護士席, you know the story. They're an amazing lot, but I wouldn't like to 株 all their 特徴.

My success began when I learned how to fight.

At Eton, I really had to fight my corner - so I'm very 感謝する to the いじめ(る)s there for teaching me that. There's definitely a time and a place for a bit of 反対する-侵略.

I've learnt to be 柔軟な.

The biggest team-leadership challenge of my life was not on an 探検隊/遠征隊, it was in the Arab army in South Oman. When I arrived there in the Sixties, I was given six Land Rovers. The 対立 were about four or five thousand strong and very 井戸/弁護士席 trained by the Soviet Union. Our own 武装した 軍隊 of 60 was ひどく より数が多いd in inhospitable, unmapped country, and Land Rovers seemed to me to be 高度に lethal because one ロケット/急騰する-propelled 手りゅう弾 from behind a 激しく揺する could take out a whole squad. So I decided to re-train the Arabs into an infantry 部隊 有能な of moving by night in groups of four, communicating in difficult 地形 and 取引,協定ing with 燃やすing heat and so on - 含むing at Ramadan, when they don't eat or drink. It was a challenge.

I've 征服する/打ち勝つd my 恐れるs by 直面するing them.

I've only ever had two 恐れるs: 高さs and spiders. In the Arabian 砂漠 these camel spiders and wolf spiders, six-インチ furry things, run all over you at night, but I was 絶えず with my Arab 兵士s, and to show 恐れる in 前線 of them was something I was more 脅すd of than the spiders. So I would smile weakly as they travelled across the sleeping 捕らえる、獲得する - and after a bit, I 設立する the 恐れる was gone. I thought when I was 60 I せねばならない get rid of the other 恐れる. But エベレスト didn't 現実に get rid of it, because when you look 負かす/撃墜する there is no 減少(する); there's just a white shoulder. I thought the north 直面する of the Eiger would cure me, but in fact the only way to get to the 最高の,を越す of the Eiger is to not look 負かす/撃墜する, not even to think 負かす/撃墜する. After five days, I'd reached the 最高の,を越す but I hadn't 直面するd my 恐れる of 高さs. I'm still 脅すd of them.

I never 支払う/賃金 for anything.

The largest 量 of money I've ever been 責任がある was £29.5 million, which took seven years to get together from 1,900 sponsors. It was everything we needed to do the first ever 旅行 around the world, 52,000 miles through both 政治家s, which no human had ever done before - and no one has done since. Every 選び出す/独身 thing from 製図/抽選 pins 上向きs had to be sponsored. We needed a 強化するd ice ship to get us into the polar zones, we had to have a ski-計画(する) to 減少(する) 供給(する)s ahead of us along the 大勝する, but we had no bank account or cheque 調書をとる/予約する. The experience taught me you can't go 破産した/(警察が)手入れする if you don't have a bank account. The 支配する is, never 支払う/賃金 anybody for anything at any time.

I've had first-率 enemies.

I like to be first, not second, at grabbing the remaining p hysical challenges - and the Norwegians have the same 願望(する). So, for nearly 40 years I've had a constant problem with them. In the Sixties and Seventies it was Ragnar Thorseth. When I was trying to cross the 北極の Ocean with Charlie Burton, Thorseth 解放(する)d a story to the Norwegian 圧力(をかける) that we had a 売春婦 with us. Luckily, my wife had seen us off and knew there was nothing that wasn't 絶対 決定的な on the sledges - 加える the fact that at -40C, you know... anyway, that was the Norwegians. In the Eighties and Nineties the main guy was Erling Kagge, and now it's a guy called Borge Ousland. You need healthy 競争.
