Should morning television presenters be sunny in real life?

To 裁判官 by those we’ve interviewed, the 圧力s of the 職業 are more likely to lead to thunderous moods. 会合 beleaguered presenter Adrian Chiles, we are 用意が出来ている to be given the same 嵐の治療.

Dogged since his 2009 離婚 by innuendo about his friendship with co-presenter Christine Bleakley, he にもかかわらず began last year in one of the BBC’s safest seats as presenter of the popular The One Show.

But when in April Chris Evans was brought in as his 交替／補充 to liven up Friday nights, Chiles 嵐／襲撃するd out of the BBC, his pride ‘穴を開けるd below the waterline’, taking Bleakley with him to 現在の ITV’s new Daybreak show... only to 苦しむ humiliating reviews and 悲惨な ratings.

To make 事柄s worse, a comment he made on those reviews was taken out of 状況, 主要な to headlines along the lines of, ‘Chiles calls Daybreak a “crock of ****””. His bosses read him the 暴動行為／法令／行動する.

‘I could sit here and say, “Oh it was the papers, who cares?”’ he says, still scowling from a whispered phone conversation as he walked in.

‘But there’s something about waking up at four o’clock in the morning. You’re knackered anyway, you get in the car and you 選ぶ up the papers ? which you have to read ? and there’s this personal 批評説 I’m ugly, Christine’s a slag, the programme’s a 失敗. People say don’t worry, it’s tomorrow’s 半導体素子 paper. But it’s not. It’s not written in 署名／調印する any more. Whatever you 令状 today, my kids will be able to Google in 30 years’ time.’

He glares accusingly. It doesn’t seem a good start to the conversation. But in fact, from 嵐の beginnings what 続いて起こるs will be ますます friendly, Chiles getting so much off his chest that by end he’ll be swapping phone numbers and showing us his lucky pebble ? a 石／投石する from a Welsh beach that he’s kept since he was a boy, ‘in 事例／患者 something horrible happens to me if I lose it’.

Even the prospect of a shoot styled like a 冷淡な War 尋問刺激するs not 疑惑 but the surprise 発覚 that he was once nearly 新採用するd for MI5.

‘When I was a young ma n I fancied 存在 a 外交官, so I took the Civil Service exam. I got a letter that said, “Although you were 不成功の in your 使用／適用 to join the Civil Service, there is other 政府 work for which you might be considered.” A woman gave me a four-hour interview in a room above a hi-fi shop on Tottenham 法廷，裁判所 Road. At the end she said, “井戸／弁護士席, you must be wondering what the 職業 is. As you must have 嫌疑者，容疑者／疑うd, I work for British 知能.”

‘I looked blankly at her, so she said, “That’s MI5.”

'She told me I’d be listening to bugged telephone calls, that I wasn’t 許すd to tell anybody, and made me 調印する the 公式の／役人 Secrets 行為／法令／行動する. Then I got a 公式文書，認める two weeks later to say that I wasn’t suitable. Within a 事柄 of weeks, I told everyone I knew. When I told my mum she thought I’d been 申し込む／申し出d a 職業 by MFI.’

The story casts the not conspicuously 社債-like Chiles in a new light, but anyone who paid attention to his 早期に career on The Money Programme and Panorama would know that there’s far more to the 43-year-old, Birmingham-born, half-Croatian 新聞記者／雑誌記者 than 単に sitting on a brightly coloured sofa. In fact, with Daybreak the seating is half the problem.

‘I’ve got to get a decent sofa,’ he g rumbles. ‘I’m not comfortable in my 肌 anyway but you can’t sit 支援する on it, you can’t sit upright on it, you can’t lean anywhere on it. That’s pretty 根底となる. And I need to go 支援する to wearing a 控訴. The jumper makes me look and feel like an unmade bed.’

Ratings for Daybreak have been rising since the 意気込み／士気-sapping autumn low of 500,000, but Chiles never thought they’d reach the million 示す that they do now 定期的に ? thanks, he says, to a looser 判型, brighter studio and his own readjustment to the 残虐な working hours.

‘I don’t think there’s a more gruelling show than a breakfast show. It’s psychologically 堅い. You wake up at 3.45am and that’s the best you feel all day. Most people get up, have breakfast, get to work and their day builds up to some 肉親，親類d of 頂点（に達する） later on. But we’re straight out of bed, adrenaline, caffeine, news, 強調する／ストレス!

‘I don’t really do chirpiness. Christine does. I can’t 耐える the sight of myself in the morning. I wouldn’t want to wake up with me. That’s the 問題／発行する. My mind will wander off in the middle of a live interview. It’s horrendous. A lot of the 早期に批評 said, “They don’t seem 権利 in the mornings.” Better that, than, “I fundamentally loathe these two.” I mean, there was a bit of that. But yes, I’m aware you need to look relaxed.

'Piers Morgan was really helpful. He gave me a team talk about six weeks ago at his 地元の. He told me, “You’ve got to 元気づける up a bit. People don’t want to look at a grumpy bloke for two hours every morning.” He said to take 責任／義務, 運動 the mood of it. Piers せねばならない be a life coach.’

Chiles is the classic Brummie, all self-deprecation and sardonic wit. He is serious about his 職業, dislikes his celebrity, and would much rather have 開始する，打ち上げるd Daybreak without any ファンファーレ／誇示, worked out the kinks and then given it a big 押し進める around now.

He compares himself to Alan Pardew, who was 指名するd Newcastle’s 経営者／支配人 to the fans’ 狼狽: ‘Nobody turned up for his 圧力（をかける）開始する，打ち上げる, he got booed on to the pitch, but 激しく揺する底（に届く） is 絶対 where you want to start out.’

激しく揺する底（に届く） is where Daybreak’s 見解（をとる）ing 人物／姿／数字s stood for a long time, 主要な at worst to rumours of Chiles and Bleakley 存在取って代わるd. There was even talk of the I’m A Celebrity… 生産者s 存在パラシュート（で降下する）d in to sex things up…

‘I 港／避難所’t heard that,’ Chiles demurs. ‘But if they want to come in and make me eat bugs in the morning to 上げる ratings, this is 商業の television so I’ll have to do it. I was 持つ／拘留するing a flipping snow ヒョウ this morning. They’re always docile until the day they bite your arm off, aren’t they?

'We had a choir of schoolkids in at the time and I thought we really could go out in a 炎 of glory here ? you couldn’t get a much worse headline than “Daybreak ヒョウ Attacks Children”.’

He 許すs himself a dark chuckle. It’s possible that Chiles is too analytical for this particular 職業. Shallow positivity 控訴s morning telly, not gallows humour.

‘My instinct is to be self-effacing, but in print you come out as 消極的な and 哀れな ? and you’ve seen the trouble that gets you into,’ he 収容する／認めるs, referring to the November interview which 焦点（を合わせる）d on Daybreak’s awful 早期に reviews.

‘Plainly, I wasn’t 説 Daybreak was a crock of ****. I was referring to the newspaper ニュース報道. But then that became the 引用する, and all the papers were 説, “Adrian Chiles 収容する／認めるs it’s the worst show anyone’s seen for years.”’

Did that get you shouted at?

‘Yes. I defended myself and it hasn’t done any 継続している損失. But public perception is like an oil タンカー ? you can’t turn it around. People used to stop me on the street and say how much they liked a programme. Now they stop me and say, “井戸／弁護士席 I like Daybreak,” or, “We watch it anyway,” with a look of pity on their 直面するs. It’s hard to change the narrative that the whole thing’s a 災害, even when the 人物／姿／数字s are going in the 権利 direction.

'It’s just plain not fair any more. I recently read a piece about the ITV football, which casually said, “It’s gone a lot better than the Daybreak fiasco.” That was only this week. 井戸／弁護士席, it’s a lot of things, and if you don’t like it that’s 罰金, but it is no longer a fiasco.’

Chiles notices the lady from 管理／経営 shaking her 長，率いる as he veers に向かって a publicity minefield she thought she’d （疑いを）晴らすd. He takes a sip of water and continues as if it was the football we were talking about all along ? not unreasonably, since his World Cup ニュース報道 for ITV last summer was far better received than that of the BBC team he’d just left.

‘I went to ITV not really knowing whether I could do live football, but I’m finding I really love it. Having the 商業の breaks is the biggest advantage. I don’t know how they do it on the BBC.’

Is he disappointed he won’t be covering the 2018 World Cup from English stadiums?

‘If the 2018 cup had come here, it might not have been shown on ITV ? or the BBC? at all. The 政府 was 用意が出来ている to 一時停止する最初の／主要な法律制定 so that FIFA could sell the ニュース報道 to the highest 入札者 ? probably Sky. It was in the technical 文書, as a sweetener. There is indeed talk of moving the event to winter to 避ける the heat. Chiles 追加するs, ‘The central problem with FIFA is that it’s in a monopoly position, and everybody knows that 力／強力にする corrupts and absolu te 力／強力にする corrupts 絶対.’

Given half a chance, Chiles will talk about football until the waiters are putting 議長，司会を務めるs up on the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議するs. A 熱烈な West Bromwich Albion fan with WBA in the 登録 number of both his cars and the club crest in stained glass above his 前線 door, he used to play in the Amateur Football 協会 and reckons he’d never have gone into television if it wasn’t for a bone-crunching 取り組む when he was 20.

‘I was playing for Ulysses against Amersham Town and one of them broke my 脚 in two. If he hadn’t, I’d probably have a tan, a foreign wife and I’d be a penniless teacher somewhere in Croatia now.’

Chiles had been on a teaching course at the time, with a 職業 lined up at the British 会議 in Zagreb. The 傷害 was so bad he was in plaster for a year and spent it watching TV during the first 湾 War and the 落ちる of Mrs Thatcher. When he saw John Sergeant thrust his microphone at a conspired-against Thatcher on the steps of the British 大使館 in Paris, Chiles knew what he 手配中の，お尋ね者 to do for a living.

‘We’ve got very complementary ski lls,’ Chiles glows. ‘She’s much more technically minded. She’s better with the （手先の）技術 of television, she knows about cameras and lighting and sound. She’s much more organised and her 力／強力にするs of 集中 are a million times better than 地雷.

'Nobody ever believes us, but it’s become like a brother-sister thing. It’s a marriage in the sense that we have the same arguments that couples do. I know how to make her happy and I know how to 勝利，勝つd her up. I do all of the above and she does the same to me.

'Take your best 同僚 at work ? imagine working with her all day every day for four years. It’s a pretty 広大な／多数の／重要な業績／成就 that we’re still friends after all that.’

Such onscreen chemistry is so rare that gossip 必然的に spread about the 二人組. Chiles’ 離婚 from his wife, Woman’s Hour presenter Jane Garvey, in 2008 was an open 招待 to the rumour-mill. The 関わりあい／含蓄 of an 事件／事情／状勢 is the one thing that makes Chiles livid. The only thing that makes him half as mad is when people sneer at Bleakley.

‘It’s an 絶対の炎上ing 不名誉, the way she’s been 扱う／治療するd as this 計画／陰謀ing, vindictive social 登山者 (for dating Frank Lampa rd and 交渉するing her 支払う／賃金上向きs). She hasn’t got it in her to be ambitious. We’d still be doing The One Show now if things hadn’t changed on us. Other people make your 計画（する）s for you in this 商売／仕事.’

Things changed on them when it was decided that Chris Evans’ 上昇傾向 personality was a better fit for the Friday night show than Chiles. It was too much for his pride to 耐える and he defected to ITV.

‘It’s been portrayed as the ITV director Peter Fincham showing me a スーツケース十分な of money in a pub and 誘惑するing me across. I’m 井戸／弁護士席-paid now, but it wasn’t about money, it was about the 主要な／長／主犯, as stupid as that might sound. Nobody at the BBC was going to change their mind (about Evans taking Fridays) so I said yes.’

Evans has said he wouldn’t have taken The One Show 職業 if you hadn’t told him you were leaving.

‘I don’t recognise his 見解／翻訳／版 of events. He （機の）カム on the show, we went out drinking and I think I might have について言及するd I was coming to the end of my 契約. He says I 港／避難所’t spoken to him since and I 港／避難所’t, but then I only met him twice. I 耐える him no ill-will. He was 申し込む／申し出d a really successful show with a 保証（人）d audience. If my own brother had taken the 職業 I wouldn’t have 非難するd him. I should’ve texted Chris and said that. I apologise to him if I （機の）カム across as rude.’

Chiles, remarkably, doesn’t 支配する out going 支援する to the BBC.

‘I 港／避難所’t made any enemies ? 井戸／弁護士席, I suppose I fell out with the 監査役 of BBC1, but lots of people （機の）カム to my leaving do who didn’t have to. I still get emotional thinking about how nice Alan Sugar was. I’ve burnt no 橋（渡しをする）s. That’s not to say I 持つ／拘留する that ambition. Moving to ITV has worked out really 井戸／弁護士席 for me. Football is 広大な／多数の／重要な, Daybreak is now getting there and hopefully the Sunday night show will work out 同様に.’

This week Chiles 開始する，打ち上げるs That Sunday Night Show, a 週刊誌 discussion where a loose roster of 半分-正規の／正選手 guests such as Frank Skinner, Al Murray, John Prescott and even I’m A Celebrity... finalist Shaun Ryder will be joined by 人物／姿／数字s 関係のある to the 最高の，を越す news stories.

‘We’ve got ambitions to 目的（とする）やめる high,’ says Chiles, relishing the chance to get 支援する to 現在の事件／事情／状勢s. In his last week at The One Show, he had テレビ放送するd good-luck wishes from David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown. He likes ‘存在 across the news’, as he calls it. But, ever the Brummie, he 主張するs any ambitions he has are for the show, not himself.

‘Ambitions are there to be dashed,’ he says. ‘That’s part of 存在自然に悲観的な, I suppose. I don’t have a long-称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語計画（する）. I’ve made a little go a long way. I don’t really have any other marketable 技術s.’

Apart from スパイ.

‘井戸／弁護士席, I might be a 最高の，を越す秘かに調査する,’ he smiles. ‘You might have fallen into my web. I might be working for the Croatian secret service.’

It is 価値（がある） pointing out that by this 行う／開催する／段階 Chiles is standing in his pants, our interview having 流出／こぼすd over into the studio changing room. Having begun so warily he is now in a cheery mood and telling us how he can’t wait to get home and take the Friday sleeping pill that gets him 支援する on a normal time zone at the 週末. As we leave, he’s deciding on his new year 決意／決議s.

‘I’m going to get a better sofa, I’m going to wear a 控訴 and I’m going to smile more. I feel やめる肯定的な now. I just hope I don’t get another kicking when the Sunday night show starts…’
