EXCLUSIVEPHIL FODEN: The secrets of wearing No 47, the Ä´°õ¤¹¤ë he reads every morning - and what he really thinks of Jurgen Klopp

  • Man City's »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League ÇÔËÌ¡¦É餫¤¹ to Real Madrid has only ¶¯²½¤¹¤ëd Foden's ²ò·è¤¹¤ë to break new ground in the ¼óÁê League?

Some footballers like to turn their Ĺ¡¤Î¨¤¤¤ës away from history, the challenges it ¸½ºß¤Îs and the °µÎÏ it brings. Phil Foden doesn¡Çt think that way. He wants to walk ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ it.

For Foden and Manchester City, a ȯ¼Í at a »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League defence and a Ϣ³¤¹¤ë treble have gone, ground into the dirt by Real Madrid¡Çs µñÀä to buckle during an epic Etihad night on Wednesday.

But at City when one door ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ës, there is always another one to walk through. And for Foden and his team-mates a »×¤¤½Ð¤ÎÉÊ of what remains possible over the next five weeks is Îá¾õ large on the ʽ¤Ç°Ï¤à every time they lace up their boots.

¡ÆWe understand it here,¡Ç Foden says.

¡ÆWe know if we ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä the ¼óÁê League this time we will have done something new. It¡Çs something we have our ÃíÌܤ¹¤ë¡¤¤â¤¯¤í¤às on.

The last time Foden sat É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë with Mail Sport was almost five years ago. Foden was 18 and the football world was talking about why City ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í Pep Guardiola didn¡Çt play him more or at least send him out on ÂßÉÕ¶â. Foden himself, just eighteen months after his first team debut, was ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ preoccupied with all that. Beset by ¥Ú¥Æ¥ó»Õ syndrome ? a former City ball boy in a changing room ½½Ê¬¤Ê of world À±¡¿¼çÌò¤Ë¤¹¤ës ? he told me he had to stop himself asking Kevin de Bruyne for autographs every time he turned up for work.

Foden was a kid »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë then. Probably the most talented kid in England but a kid just the same. That day he agreed to jump into a ball ú¹£¡¤¥ª¡¼¥±¥¹¥È¥éÀÊ for our photographer. This week he laughed at that memory. It seems faintly ridiculous now and that¡Çs because it is. Because now Foden, a father of two, is arguably the most important player in Guardiola¡Çs team, the scorer of big goals and the owner of important moments. Manchester ÉôÂâd. Real at the Bernabeu. It doesn¡Çt »öÊÁ who the ÂÐΩ is.

Foden gets nervous before some big games. ¡Æ¥Ð¥¿¥Õ¥é¥¤s in my stomach when I get to the stadium and I know it¡Çs on,¡Ç he says. But they disappear once the game starts. ¡ÆThat first touch of the ball and I know I am in my home,¡Ç he nods.

Foden is still a young man. He is not 24 until next month. But as a sportsman he is all grown up. He is favourite to ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä this season¡Çs Player of the Year honours and Gareth Southgate will rely on him when England get to Germany for the European Áª¼ê¸¢. Foden, Bellingham, Saka, Kane. No wonder the »Ä¤ê¡¿µÙ·Æ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of Europe is nervous.

So we see him °Û¤Ê¤Ã¤Æ now. The questions have been answered. They are ¸ºß answered. Guardiola was ¸¢Íø all along. Who would have thought it?

¡ÆIt¡Çs been hard ¤¤¤Ä¤«s, you know, ¸ºß the City fan who was a ball boy and then making it through the levels to the first team,¡Ç Foden explains.

¡ÆI don¡Çt think it will ever really change you know? A little bit of that feeling is always gonna be there. But I have balance now. Maybe it¡Çs finally gone this year, I don¡Çt know.

The house where Foden grew up stands on a street corner a beefy fre e-kick away from Stockport ·´¡Çs home at Edgeley Park.

It is to this house that Foden returned »ý¤Ä¡¿¹´Î±¤¹¤ëing a ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö card at the age of just six. It had been given to him at his school by a football scout called Terry John who had visited looking for talent. He had watched Foden dribble a ball °ìÏ¢¤Î²ñµÄ¡¢¸ò¾Ä¡¿´°À®¤¹¤ë some È¿ÂС¿º¾µ½s and reckoned the kid had something.

As we talk and then do some filming for Mail Sport¡Çs social ¥Þ¥¹¥³¥ß channels at City¡Çs training ground this week, John stands ÀŤ«¤Ë in the corner. He is Foden¡Çs ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í now. Foden has always kept his circle tight and says he always will.

¡ÆI have known Terry all my life,¡Ç Foden says.

¡ÆIt¡Çs important to keep people there who have been on your ι¹Ô. Luckily he ¡Êµ¡¤Î¡Ë¥«¥à in that day to school. Had he not, I don¡Çt know where I would be ¸¢Íø now.

¡ÆIt¡Çs hard, you know. There are a lot of people who suddenly want to be part of your life who didn¡Çt know you before you become famous.

¡ÆI have always tried to keep É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë to earth and the people I have around me ¹Á¡¿ÈòÆñ½ê¡Çt changed. I have a small group and that¡Çs the way I like it.¡Ç

Foden¡Çs ι¹Ô through the City age groups was Áᤤ. It began seven miles from home at the club¡Çs old Platt ¾®Æ»¡¿¹ÒÏ© »ÜÀß, ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë to Manchester¡Çs famous curry mile in Rusholme. It¡Çs owned by the university now.

¡ÆIt was an education,¡Ç smiles Foden.

¡ÆWe had to wait for community groups to finish on the pitches before we could even get on.

¡ÆBut I wouldn¡Çt change it. It was where I learned my ¡Ê¼êÀè¤Î¡Ëµ»½Ñ.

¡ÆI just ¼êÇÛÃæ¤Î¡¤¤ª¿Ò¤Í¼Ô to have a ball at my feet. Then I was happy. Playing with older boys helped me °·¤¦ the ball in tight areas and use my physicality.

¡ÆWhen I ·ë¶É reached the first team, it was like ¸ºß a kid again. You know, I was »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë to ¸ºß the smallest. I remembered everything I had been taught as a kid and ´Êñ¤Ë transferred it in to the first team. It felt just the same.¡Ç

Once the talent was ÀßΩ¤¹¤ëd and the road to prominence mapped out, it was on to his club¡Çs modern City Football ³Ø±¡, the sprawling 16-pitch »ÜÀß across the Æó½Å¤Î carriageway from the Etihad Stadium.

On his Instagram account, there is a wonderful photograph of Foden training with the City first team for the first time in 2016. He has the ball ? of course he has ? while Sergio Aguero and Yaya ¾®Î¹¹Ô¤¹¤ë lurk nearby. At 16-years-old, he is a boy to their man in every ¹Í¤¨¤é¤ì¤ë way.

¡ÆThat photo makes me very proud,¡Ç Foden says.

There is a myth in the blue half of Manchester about Foden and his ´Ê·é¤Ê¡¿Í×Ìó¤¹¤ë ¡Ê°ìÄê¤Î¡Ë´ü´Ö as a City ball boy. It says that he was the one who threw the ball »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë for the corner that led to Edin Dzeko¡Çs equaliser against QPR as City µß½õ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ëd a lost ¸¶°ø¡Ê¤È¤Ê¤ë¡Ë to ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä the 2012 ¼óÁê League.

¡ÆNo, it¡Çs not true,¡ Ç laughs Foden.

¡ÆI was ¸½¼Â¤Ë behind that goal in the ¡Ê¿Í¤¬¡Ë·²¤¬¤ë with my mum. At the end we were on the pitch with everybody else.

¡ÆIt was the biggest thing to happen in the club¡Çs history. Without that Aguero goal we don¡Çt go on and ãÀ®¤¹¤ë what we have ãÀ®¤¹¤ëd today.

City have won six more ¼óÁê League ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ës since that day and Foden has been ȼ¤¦¡¿´Ø¤ï¤ëd in five of them. This season has perhaps been his best, one that has seen him take steps º£¸ås ¡¼¤Ë´Ø¤·¤Æ¡¿¡¼¤ÎÅÀ¤Çs of his ±Æ¶Á¡ÊÎÏ¡Ë. He has ÆÀÅÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿ÈóÆñ¤¹¤ë¡¿£²£°d 22 goals.

¡ÆI know how important it is,¡Ç nods Foden.

¡ÆMy story is nice isn¡Çt it? Every age group.

¡ÆI am so happy for myself, the club and the younger players in the ³Ø±¡.

¡ÆIt probably does all mean a little bit more to me and yeh there has been °µÎÏ.

¡ÆI had to become an adult at a very young age. I had to listen to a lot of people Àâ a lot of different things. He¡Çs not playing enough. He should go on ÂßÉÕ¶â.

¡ÆI mean I had Kevin and David [Silva] in Á°Àþ of me »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë then. I knew I didn¡Çt deserve to play.

¡ÆBut now I want to be a Ìò³ä model for this ³Ø±¡ and younger kids in my area. I tell them to never stop loving football. Because if you love it you will never be afraid of the hard work.

¡ÆHopefully young players look at me and think: ¡ÈIf Phil did it then why can¡Çt I do it?¡É¡Ç

Guardiola¡Çs City have »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë new ´ð½às in English football. Foden and his team-mates have made the °Û¾ï¤Ê normal. Teams didn¡Çt always have to be almost perfect to ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä the ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë but they do now.

¡ÆSomehow we just click in to this gear at this time of year,¡Ç Foden says.

¡ÆHopefully we can show our best now as the next three games are cup ·è¾¡Àï. I think they will decide the season.¡Ç

Foden was speaking »öÁ°¤Î to Wednesday¡Çs »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League second µÓ against Real. City should have won but didn¡Çt. It happens in football. Foden¡Çs pen alty in the shoot-out struck the »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë of the ÂáÊ᤹¤ë like a ¥ß¥µ¥¤¥ë. A week earlier, he had done likewise from open play in Spain. Big ¾×·âs.

His goal in the Bernabeu last week already has a place in his mind as one of his career best while Saturday's challenge at Wembley excites him Ê¿Åù¤Ë.

¡ÆThe FA Cup is really special to me,¡Ç he nods.

¡ÆWhen I was a kid I loved it. It¡Çs one that I always want to ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä a lot, ¸½¼Â¤Ë. The final against Man ÉôÂâd last season was amazing.¡Ç

Ãϸµ¤Î Manchester ¶¥Áè has been ¹¶·â¤¹¤ëd ¤Ò¤É¤¯ one way for all of Foden¡Çs time in the City team. Liverpool have been the Àµµ¬¤Î¡¿ÀµÁª¼ê Ä©Àï¼Ô.

¡ÆIt¡Çs a shame that Jurgen Klopp is leaving,¡Ç is Foden¡Çs surprising take on that.

Foden should get that chance this summer with England in Germany. He was part of the squad that ¡Êµ¡¤Î¡Ë¥«¥à ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë to winning the 2020 ¸«²ò¡¿ËÝÌõ¡¿ÈÇ of the Euros even though a freak ½ý³² »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ëd him out of the final against Italy at Wembley.

¡ÆThat was just crazy,¡Ç he says, shaking his Ĺ¡¤Î¨¤¤¤ë.

¡ÆI was walking in after training the day before the final. Someone just passed me the ball. I tried to »ÙÇۡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÅýÀ©¤¹¤ë it by putting one µÓ behind the other like this, just a trick, and my standing µÓ just, °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ I heard a ³ä¤ìÌÜ and I knew straight away.

¡ÆI couldn¡Çt walk. It was ÇËÌÇŪ¤Ê. I remember Gareth speaking to me and I just couldn¡Çt help crying.

¡ÆI couldn¡Çt even get any words out. I was so upset.

¡ÆI have learned a lesson from that, you know. I try and not do so much after training now. The coaches will probably tell you I am lying. But that really woke me up.¡Ç

Foden won¡Çt be the only young À±¡¿¼çÌò¤Ë¤¹¤ë in Southgate¡Çs squad. Another one stands out now. Jude Bellingham, the 20-year-old darling of Real.

Driven on by a ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í who believes in him. Foden will be Á°Àþ and central between now and the season¡Çs end. I put it to him that Guardiola must be exhausting to play for.

¡ÆNo it¡Çs the total opposite,¡Ç Foden explains.

¡ÆIt¡Çs so enjoyable. You look at what he¡Çs won and you would think he may be tired by now but every season he is the same. You can¡Çt help but rise to it.¡Ç

So on he will go. Five weeks to go. So much to play for. And what about the individual stuff? Two Player of the Year awards will be ¼êÅϤ¹d out soon. One by the PFA and one by the Football Writers¡Ç ¶¨²ñ. Do they »öÊÁ?

If that¡Çs not a very glamorous call then maybe it¡Çs appropriate. It¡Çs not a world Foden really wants to live in.

Foden may not be starstruck by other players too often, but he doesn't take for ǧ¤á¤ëd how much his life has changed

¡ÆI would go »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë there, to home, and I would be walking on the streets and people would come up asking for photos,¡Ç says Foden slowly.

¡ÆI would think it was strange because some of the people that were coming over, °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ, I already knew them from »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë when I was young.

¡ÆSo for that to be happening made me realise things had changed. Things were gonna be different from then on¡Ä¡Ç
