Stellar Blade review: 素晴らしい visuals and exhilarating 活動/戦闘 - who knew saving the 惑星 could be this much fun? 令状s PETER HOSKIN

Stellar Blade (PlayStation 5, £69.99)

判決: Almost too 悪賢い

率ing:

Want a 衝突,墜落 course on ビデオ gaming in the 2020s? Then play Stellar Blade. It's a mishmash of some of the best games of the past 10年間 or so.

There's the die-and-try-again brutality of Dark Souls. The 力/強力にするd-up 戦闘 of Final Fantasy VII: Remake. The overgrown 地位,任命する-apocalypse of The Last of Us. And the plaintive sci-fi トン of Nier: Automata ? oh, and that same game's sword-(権力などを)行使するing 未来-babes, too.

Although 'mishmash' might be a bit 不公平な. Stellar Blade is one of the slickest games I've ever played. In everything from its marble-smooth 戦闘 to its exhilarating cutscenes, it shows off what can be 達成するd nowadays, given enough time and money. It doesn't so much steal things from どこかよそで as give them a makeover and 包む them up in a pretty 屈服する.

There's a lot of razzle-dazzle, and quite a lot of fun to be had, too. Though there's always something about Stellar Blade that feels a little too polished ? like it's an advert for games in 2024

Or do I mean a corset? There's no 避けるing the fact that Stellar Blade's main character - a 最高の-兵士 called Eve who's trying to 埋め立てる Earth from terrible monsters - is 扱う/治療するd as something of a doll. You can change the length of her hair in the 選択s menu, though her 脚s always remain improbably long, and there's a variety of skimpy 衣装s in which to dress her. It's not how I'd save the 惑星.

Still, there's plenty around Eve to also catch the 注目する,もくろむ. Stellar Blade is a 素晴らしい-looking game, one of the few in this 世代 to really 演習 the PlayStation 5's 能力s.

But, in a way, that's also the problem. There's a lot of razzle-dazzle, and やめる a lot of fun to be had, too. Though there's always something about Stellar Blade that feels a little too polished ? like it's an advert for games in 2024.

Lunar Lander Beyond??(PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, £24.99)

判決: A retrorocket

率ing:

Let's go 支援する. Way 支援する. To 1979, in fact, when Atari 解放(する)d a game called Lunar Lander. The 概念 had 初めは been 奮起させるd by the moon 上陸s: you, the player, controlled an unwieldy 宇宙船, using thrusters to 推進する and stabilise it, in the hope of making a 安全な 降下/家系 の上に some extraterrestrial surface.

Now let's go 今後s. Way 今後s. To 2024, in fact, when humans have colonised 火星, we all zoom around in 飛行機で行くing cars ? and Lunar Lander has been rebooted by Atari as Lunar Lander Beyond.

Beyond is, as you'd 推定する/予想する, much more sophisticated than its forbear. An entire narrative has been superimposed の上に the experience ? of galactic anomalies and 勇敢に立ち向かう crewmen ? and it's told through artful animated sequences.

Within the levels, there are new abilities, challenges and threats, including the possibility that your bashed-about pilot might go mad and start seeing pink elephants and other enjoyable distortions

Within the levels, there are new abilities, challenges and 脅しs, 含むing the 可能性 that your bashed-about 操縦する might go mad and start seeing pink elephants and other enjoyable distortions. If they do, you can put them into psychiatric care and (軍隊を)展開する,配備する another 操縦する instead, with their own strengths and 証拠不十分s.

However, underneath all of Beyond's 革新s, in a rather charming way, is the same ol' classic gameplay. You have to 支配(する)/統制する an unwieldy 宇宙船 and then 安全に land it. Again and again. It's やめる simple, really.

Except, for as cack-手渡すd a gamer as me, it's also やめる difficult. Those moments when I 全く understood the flight of my (手先の)技術 felt wonderful, but they were few and far between. Better players will have more 推論する/理由 to keep on going, 努力する/競うing for mastery and higher 得点する/非難する/20s.

To them I say: good luck. Your 惑星 needs you.
