'We had to get Susanna': As Good Morning Britain turns ten, KATIE HIND 明らかにする／漏らすs the inside story of how ITV 誘惑するd its biggest 星／主役にする away from the BBC - and her surprising next move to save the show
It all began with a secret 会合 at the Notting Hill home of a 上級の television (n)役員／(a)執行力のある.
長，指導者 の中で the guests was Susanna Reid, a 星／主役にする contestant on 厳密に Come Dancing in late 2013, co-presenter of BBC Breakfast and 広範囲にわたって considered within broadcasting circles to be the next big thing in television. The point of the 会合 was to 支持を得ようと努める Ms Reid from the BBC's red sofa to a new comfy 位置／汚点／見つけ出す on one at ITV.
She listened without much enthusiasm, however, as ITV's then CEO Peter Fincham made his audacious 企て，努力，提案, 輪郭（を描く）ing his team's 計画（する）s to 若返らせる their daytime television schedule after the ratings 低迷 苦しむd by the news breakfast show Daybreak, which had 取って代わるd GMTV in 2010.
'We had to get Susanna,' says an ITV insider now. 'This had to work, there was so much 残り／休憩（する）ing on it. But it wasn't 平易な. She wasn't buying it at first.
'The nation had fallen in love with her while she was on 厳密に. She was the hottest thing on television but she was BBC through and through.'
With her 1 6-year marriage to 新聞記者／雑誌記者 Dominic Cotton having ended in 2014, however, Ms Reid was 'nervous' about fresh attention as she upped her public profile. 'Susanna was very fearful of jumping ship,' says a source 伴う／関わるd in the 取引，協定.

A source said Piers Morgan 'blew in like a human トルネード，竜巻 and it was just the 上げる the show needed to take it to the next level'
急速な／放蕩な 今後 a few weeks and there were シャンペン酒 corks popping at ITV HQ: they had got their 星／主役にする by 報道によれば 二塁打ing her salary to around £700,000. Waiting in the wings to join her was Ben Shephard, poached by the 網状組織 from Sky where he'd been covering sport.
And this coming Monday there will be more 祝賀s at the channel as Good Morning Britain celebrates its tenth birthday, with mother-of-three Ms Reid still at the 舵輪／支配. 一方／合間 Shephard recently moved to sister show, This Morning, と一緒に Cat Deeley.
It is a milestone that some, かもしれない even Ms Reid, thought the show might never reach. During its １０年間 on the airwaves, it has come under 激しい scrutiny ? and at times, serious 批評 ? for its ratings and choice of presenters.

Several execs flew out to New York to 熟考する／考慮する US breakfast TV, spending time behind the scenes at both NBC's Today show and ABC's Good Morning America. 見解（をとる）ing the latter as 'more light-hearted and fun', they decided to use it as a 詳細な計画 for their own 投機・賭ける, and after discussing va rious 指名するs, 含むing Good Morning UK, they settled on Good Morning Britain.
'We had modelled the show on Good Morning America, に引き続いて a visit to The Today show,' 確認するs Helen Warner, the (n)役員／(a)執行力のある who 開始する，打ち上げるd GMB. 'We loved both shows but felt that Good Morning America had a livelier and more fun atmosphere that we 手配中の，お尋ね者 to replicate.

'On the morning we visited, the whole cast of Downton Abbey and a 比較して unknown actor called Benedict Cumberbatch were guests and it was like a party at 6.30am.'

'There was so much excitement,' one former staff member said. 'Susanna and Ben were みなすd to be the perfect pairing. Daybreak had been a 災害 so there was no other 選択 but for GMB to be a 抱擁する success.'
Yet 神経s were high too. Careers were on the line, and stealing a big 星／主役にする from the BBC by no means 保証（人）d success. Three years before, ITV had poached both Christine Lampard ? then Bleakley ? and Adrian Chiles from the BBC's One Show where they had a 抱擁する and loyal audience, to co-host Daybreak.
But those big money 調印s 証明するd a flop, with テレビ視聴者s 行方不明の Chiles's いつかs 'subtle' sense of humour and instead labelling him 哀れな.?
Ms Lampard was 決定するd to make it work, but after いっそう少なく than a year they were 取って代わるd by Aled Jones and Lorraine Kelly. A year later, the 判型 was binned.
'開始する，打ち上げるing GMB was the hardest thing I have ever done,' says Ms Warner. 'Its 前任者, Daybreak, was crucified by the 圧力（をかける） from the moment it 開始する，打ち上げるd, and we knew that the knives would be out for GMB.
'We 解決するd to put our tin hats on and try to ignore the noise, 確信して that we had the 権利 show and the 権利 line-up. But nothing could have 用意が出来ている us for the 猛攻撃 that followed.'
Just a week after the 開始する，打ち上げる, Good Morning Britain 設立する itself the 支配する of a slew of newspaper headlines after its ratings fell through the 床に打ち倒す on the first May bank holiday ? halving from its 開始 800,000 テレビ視聴者s to just over 400,000.
One former staff member 述べるs that time as 'pure hell'.
Ms Warner takes the 非難する, admitting that bank holidays always have lower audiences, so the show shouldn't have 開始する，打ち上げるd so の近くに t o one.
It 'took time to 回復する' from that 騒動, she says, but the team 解決するd to 'keep their 長，率いるs 負かす／撃墜する' and keep going.
Ms Reid, though, had other 計画（する）s. Worried perhaps for her own 評判, she 開始する，打ち上げるd her own charm 不快な／攻撃 to save the show.

Ms Reid was charm personified and it worked: my editor was smitten, and after that not one bad word was printed. I later learned that the presenter had been doing the same across the newspaper 産業, taking time to 会合，会う 上級の (n)役員／(a)執行力のあるs from every 出版（物）.

As one former GMB staff member put it: 'Susanna got to the point where she knew she had to take 事柄s into her own 手渡すs and go out and sell the show.
'She is very impressive in the flesh. Suddenly, it all stopped.'
A year later, the show received a 抱擁する 上げる when Ms Warner, ITV's former director of daytime, 雇うd Piers Morgan ? which 支援する then was the クーデター of all クーデターs.
It started with a chance conversation with Morg an, who すぐに afterwards filled in for Shephard for a week. By then, Morgan was a reasonably experienced TV host, with his own ITV show ? Piers Morgan's Life Stories ? and a slot on CNN in America, Piers Morgan Live.
Even so. 'No one was very sure if it was a good idea,' says a show insider. 'Least of all Piers. But he blew in like a human トルネード，竜巻 and it was just the 上げる the show needed to take it to the next level.'
In 2016 he was 雇うd 永久的に. Bosses knew that if they sat him next to Ms Reid they would have one of the strongest 二塁打 行為／法令／行動するs on television.
Her eyerolling at Morgan's outrageous comments became a motif, and at times a 全国的な talking point.
A show source said: 'Ben was always loved, but to have Piers and Susanna together made it all very A-名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）. Piers was in his prime and he brought テレビ視聴者s with him. The show went to a different level.
'You can imagine how much Piers saw himself as the saviour, and loved that.'
Later that year （機の）カム another pivotal moment for GMB - victory for Donald Trump in the US 選挙. Morgan had a long-standing 関係 with Trump, having appeared on - and won - Celebrity 見習い工 in the US, with Trump in the Sir Alan Sugar 役割.?

That meant he had unique 接近 to him, and an insider's 見解（をとる） of the new 大統領，／社長 ? even a friendship with him ? that he often 地位，任命するd about on social マスコミ. It put GMB on the 地図／計画する globally.
'The upper echelons at ITV were 絶対 thrilled,' says a show source.
見解（をとる）ing 人物／姿／数字s reached a million, and にもかかわらず still 存在 beaten by BBC Breakfast, the new 調印 had made a 抱擁する 衝撃. When the pandemic 攻撃する，衝突する, Morgan prided himself on becoming the 発言する／表明する of his テレビ視聴者s, taking MPs from across the political spectrum to 仕事 every day.
In March 2021, however, after six years on the programme, he やめる in a 列／漕ぐ／騒動 over comments he'd made about the Duchess of Sussex. When Morgan 主張するd he 'didn't believe a word' Meghan said about her mental health during the Sussexes' interview with Oprah Winfrey, 41,000 テレビ視聴者s complained to Ofcom.?
The regulator later 設立する in Morgan's favour, but it was too late ? ITV CEO Dame Carolyn McCall had 恐らく already given him an 最終提案: apologise or leave.
He left, 明言する／公表するing that 'freedom of speech is a hill I'm happy to die on'.

'That's the dream,' says one 従業員. 'But to do that they really do need to find another Piers.'
