It's a 粉砕する 攻撃する,衝突する, but is it WRONG to go and see Michael Jackson the Musical? Read on and decide what you think

When I first saw the posters for MJ: the Musical as I was getting on a train at London's Charing Cross, I couldn't やめる believe it. I marvelled at the 厚かましさ/高級将校連 neck of its 生産者s, The Michael Jackson 広い地所, in daring to bring us a biographical jukebox music-and-dance extravaganza about an artist still so dogged by a worrying 評判.

'Broadway sensation' trumpeted the poster, plastered in five 星/主役にする reviews. '指名するd for ten Tony Awards!'

It's a busy 12 months for Michael Jackson fans: 'Michael' the biopic is 予定 to come out 早期に next year, with Jackson's own 甥 Jaafar playing him; 最高の,を越す Gun: 無所属の政治家's Miles Teller as MJ's lawyer; and The Fresh Prince of Bel-空気/公表する's Nia Long as Jackson's mother Katherine. The film 約束s to cover everything in his life and to 'humanise but not sanitise' the singer's life story. But as this is also 支援するd by the MJ 広い地所, for whom the only honest 描写 of the 主張s that (名声などを)汚すd Jackson is one that 主張するs his innocence, that (人命などを)奪う,主張する (犯罪の)一味s a little hollow.

一方/合間 MJ: the Musical opened just before 復活祭 at one of the Delfont Mackintosh theatres, the Prince Edward, and has received a mixture of 懐疑的な and 噴出するing reviews. The show's creators ― Pulitzer-Prize winning 脚本家 Lynn Nottage and acclaimed ballet choreographer Christopher Wheeldon ― gloss over the King of Pop's スキャンダルs 完全に, helped by the dodge-the-弾丸 決定/判定勝ち(する) to 始める,決める the musical in 1992 (though enlivened by colourful flashbacks to the Jackson 5) in the days 主要な up to the Dangerous World 小旅行する.

It was only after Dangerous World had wrapped that the wheels started to 落ちる off the Jackson juggernaut. In 1993, the father of 13-year-old Jordan Chandler (刑事)被告 Jackson of sexually 乱用ing his son. Then in 2003 Jackson was 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d with child molestation by 生存者 Gavin Arvizo. Jackson settled with the Chandlers and he was acquitted in the Arvizo 事例/患者. But the 主張s dogged the 残り/休憩(する) of his life and have continued long after his death in 2009, most recently with the hard-hitting four-hour 文書の Leaving Neverland, featuring two 申し立てられた/疑わしい 犠牲者s.

Enthusiastic critics have 賞賛するd the show as a sensational and exhilarating jukebox みごたえのある, letting it off the hook for swerving all について言及する of スキャンダル. But this is a censorious world we live in. It's a world in which artists can be cancelled just for what they say ? such as JK Rowling for her 堅い trans 姿勢 and Lizzo for her 団体/死体-shaming big mouth ? let alone for 犯罪の 行為s and underage 乱用.

The innocent text, 'So what does everyone think of the question of whether to go to MJ: the Musical?' kicked off an 84-message fight on my girlfriends' WhatsApp group earlier this week.

So it was no surprise when, in my own 世帯 of 堅固に held opinions, a discussion about whether we would go to MJ: the Musical 爆発するd into 炎ing 審議 this week. What was surprising was which 味方する of the fault line of 論争 the different 世代s fell.

My 22-year-old daughter was (疑いを)晴らす. 'I've seen トンs of stuff about this on [social マスコミ 場所/位置] Reddit. People think the 主張s were made up by people just trying to make money out of him, that a 法廷,裁判所 事例/患者 in 2005 brought by one 申し立てられた/疑わしい 犠牲者 崩壊(する)d for 欠如(する) of 証拠 and that, when it comes 負かす/撃墜する to it, 非,不,無 of those boys 現実に ever said that Jackson touched them up.'

She and her boyfriend both reckon that Michael Jackson undoubtedly had a traumatised childhood, in which he was never 許すd to be a child and was p robably beaten by his father, the 悪名高い Joe Jackson, and that the 悪名高い Neverland 'sleepovers' were just his weird Peter Pan way of trying to 再度捕まえる childhood experiences he never had.

They 主張するd they would be more than happy to go to the musical because they love his music - and the 攻撃する,衝突するs of the Jackson 5 - and 尊敬(する)・点 the reviews: not just those of the 設立するd theatre critics' but, more importantly for them, the thousands of enthusiastic reviews online.

These, to my 広大な/多数の/重要な surprise, outweighed the few-and-far-between Gen Z 発言する/表明するs calling for Tiktok and Reddit 使用者s to ボイコット(する) the show.

But then these 20-somethings didn't live through the uneasiness of the Nineties and Noughties, when Michael Jackson's 指名する in a headline usually made for uncomfortable reading. We adults remember it all too 井戸/弁護士席.

Who didn't squirm when they read about 34-year-old Jackson beggin g Jordy Chandler's mother 'with 涙/ほころびs in his 注目する,もくろむs' to 許す her 13-year-old son to 株 his bed for over three months? Who didn't think there was something just a bit off about a grown man living in a play world of childish fantasies, hanging out with ten-year-old Home Alone 星/主役にする Macaulay Culkin and calling a chimpanzee his best friend?

And who didn't watch the 2019 文書の and want to 封鎖する their 注目する,もくろむs and ears at the lurid 詳細(に述べる)s put 今後 by Wade Robson and James Safechuck about the vitiligo 場内取引員/株価s they saw on Jackson's genitalia when they (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to have 株d his bed as children? Yes, their (人命などを)奪う,主張するs were 最初 thrown out in that 2005 裁判,公判 which saw Jackson (疑いを)晴らすd of all 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s, but they look 始める,決める to have their 事例/患者 heard again in 2025.

I love a musical more than the next person. I also love Michael Jackson's music (I once 成し遂げるd Billie ジーンズ in a school talent show) so I would 普通は be raring to go. But I am too squeamish to buy tickets for this one.

I can't help but remember all the troubling articles and 文書のs and I think with disquiet of the way Jackson paid off Jordan Chandler, buying his silence with so many millions of dollars so that he 表面上は disappeared after 2005.

関わりなく the 合法的な distinctions of wrong and 権利, I don't think we should be celebrating such a troubled man.

While my daughter thinks he was the 犠牲者, I think he was the miscreant: no 事柄 how screwed up he undoubtedly was, it is 否定できない that Michael Jackson 乱用d his position, fame and wealth to serve his own weird 目的s of '存在 a child'. If the singer at your 地元の pub asked if they could have your child in their bed every night for three months, no parent on this earth would say yes, no 事柄 how good they were at belting out your favo urite Take That song.

But then we wander into the murky waters of whether art should be separated from moral considerations.

If we 'cancelled' the 代表s of every 疑わしい real life 'artiste', we would not have been able to enjoy last year's biopic of Napoleon, which skated over his 暴力/激しさ and megalomaniac use of 兵士s as 大砲 fodder, watch a 選び出す/独身 picture made by Woody Allen, or marvel at a 絵 by Caravaggio.

Perhaps the younger 世代 have the 権利 approach this time; innocent until proven 有罪の should 適用する to the world of art and we should take off the white glove of 裁判/判断.

A biopic or bio-musical is not a biography; it doesn't have to be exhaustive.

My daughter seemed a bit disappointed when I told her she'd have to go and watch MJ without me - she was hoping I'd 支払う/賃金. But there's no way I am going: buying tickets and putting yet more dollars into the pockets of the Jackson family, let alone celebrating his life, is distasteful to me.
