SARAH VINE: This has been the making of King Charles: Like so many families who 直面する serious illness, the shock and realisation of what's at 火刑/賭ける has 部隊d the 王室のs

Today's 告示 about the health of the King feels like a 抱擁する 救済, a chink of (疑いを)晴らす blue sky in an さもなければ rather 暗い/優うつな horizon. After months of games through no fault or 願望(する) of his own, King Charles is slowly returning to his 義務s ? just in time to celebrate the first 周年記念日 of his 載冠(式)/即位(式), on May 6th.

I must 自白する that when the Palace first 発表するd that the King was 苦しむing from , I ? like many ? had a sense of 深い foreboding. And when the news subsequently broke that the Princess of むちの跡s was also 戦う/戦いing the 病気, it really felt as though the 王室の Family was 存在 押し進めるd to breaking point.

It wasn't just the fact that two of its most 目だつ and loved members were suddenly 本気で ill; it was also that the news (機の)カム at the end of an already difficult period.

The death of Elizabeth II, に先行するd by the loss of Prince Philip, the acrimonious 出発 of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, not to について言及する the shame and humiliation of the Prince Andrew 事件/事情/状勢 ? it all just seemed to be one calamity after another.

I felt 猛烈に sorry for the King, a man ? who for all his past faults ? has worked incredibly hard over the years to 勝利,勝つ 支援する the 信用 and 尊敬(する)・点 of the British people after the 悲劇 of what happened between him and Princess Diana.

Having met and spent time with him 本人自身で on several occasions over the years, I have always 設立する him to be a thoughtful man, a little melancholy at times, someone with more self-認識/意識性 than those in 類似の positions usually 所有する (see Andrew), acutely aware of his 責任/義務s and incredibly serious-minded about his 義務s.

He is a 肉親,親類d man too, as we saw at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding, when he walked Meghan up the aisle in place of her own father, who was too ill to …に出席する.

And when it comes to the 害(を与える) his youngest son and his wife have done to both him and Prince William, and also to Queen Camilla and the Princess of むちの跡s, he has 論証するd almost saintly levels of composure and patience.

Whatever else he may have done in his life, he is 決定するd to make the most of the 巨大な 特権 conferred upon him by an 事故 of birth and to do some good in the world.

Becoming 君主 is not just a 儀式 of passage for him, it has deeper meaning ? as anyone who 証言,証人/目撃するd the solemnity with which he undertook last year's 載冠(式)/即位(式) would attest.

He knows he won't be king for anything like the same length of time as his late mother ? but he ーするつもりであるs to make his 示す and do as much as he can to honour his mother's 遺産/遺物 and 安全な・保証する the 未来 of the 君主国 for 世代s to come.

That is why his illness was such a blow. It stopped him in his 跡をつけるs just as he was starting to get into his stride. It 軍隊d him to 激突する on the ブレーキs and take time out at 正確に the moment when he hoped to be going 十分な steam ahead. Apart from anything else, it just seemed so damned 不公平な.

A lesser man might have succumbed to despondency; but the King has remained relentlessly 上昇傾向 throughout this 過程, staying in touch with 現在の 事件/事情/状勢s, as curious as ever, 会合 with 信用d friends and 助言者s.

He has obeyed his doctors and done what had to be done ? but if he has been 軍隊d to slow 負かす/撃墜する 肉体的に, he has not done so mentally. Indeed, if anything, this illness has 焦点(を合わせる)d his mind and made him even more 決定するd to 圧力(をかける) on with his 計画(する)s.

And in a funny way, it's been the making of him as 君主 ? and of Queen Camilla. She has been brilliant at stepping up, not just 代表するing the King but also filling in for the Princess of むちの跡s as she takes time out for 治療. The public have got to know this woman, with her warm smile and sense of humour, far quicker than they might have done さもなければ.

We have seen just how much of a team they really are - and the 質s he has always seen in her. And it's also 強化するd the King's 社債 with Prince William and the Princess of むちの跡s who, while still out of the limelight was 任命するd 王室の Companion of The Order of the Companions of Honour this Tuesday on St George's Day.

Like so many families who 直面する serious illness, the shock and realisation of what's at 火刑/賭ける has brought them closer together. It's 証言 to the King's strength of character and 決意 that he has 直面するd this 裁判,公判 with such a 肯定的な mental 態度.
