Venice: A city of islands

Few cities are as Ê¿°×¤Ê to conjure in the mind as Venice. The very »Ø̾¤¹¤ë evokes a stream of cinematic images, from singing gondoliers and grand marble palaces to the dreamy ¥É¡¼¥às and arches of the Cathedral Basilica of St. ¼¨¤¹.

Venice is »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë within a lagoon and is made up of more than 100 small islands, all of which are criss-crossed by a ÌÖ¾õÁÈ¿¥ of canals, ¶¶¡ÊÅϤ·¤ò¤¹¤ë¡Ës and labyrinthine backstreets. Its ability to ¼ºË¾¤µ¤»¤ë the most competent of ÃÏ¿Þ¡¿·×²è¤¹¤ë readers is ÅÁÀâ¤Î, yet there is nothing better than ¼õÂ÷¤¹¤ëing ÇÔËÌ¡¦É餫¤¹ and losing yourself within its Êø²õ¤¹¤ëing beauty. Yes, it¡Çs often ¡Ê¿Í¤¬¡Ë·²¤¬¤ëd ? ¤¤¤Ä¤«s unbearably so ? but if you ·×²è¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë your trip °æ¸Í¡¿ÊÛ¸î»ÎÀÊ, you¡Çll still be rewarded with one of the most jaw-dropping plac es on the ÏÇÀ±.

It¡Çs a city of architectural splendour and exquisite art. It has one-of-a-Æù¿Æ¡¤¿ÆÎàd sights like the Grand Canal, the Gothic Doge¡Çs Palace and the ¶¶¡ÊÅϤ·¤ò¤¹¤ë¡Ë of Sighs built in 1600. It¡Çs home to ÅÁÅýŪ¤Ê artisans who still work by ¼êÅϤ¹, from glass blowers and bookbinders to silk weavers and mask À½Â¤¼Ôs. No wonder Byron called it a ¡Æfairy city of the heart¡Ç. It doesn¡Çt »öÊÁ how many times you¡Çve seen it ÉÁ¼Ì¤¹¤ëd on film or in print, the reality is more ¶Ã¤¯¤Ù¤¡¿ÆÃÌ¿¤Î¡¿Î×»þ¤Î than you could ever be ÍÑ°Õ¤¬½ÐÍè¤Æ¤¤¤ë for.

How to get there

Venice is served by two airports. Marco Polo is the closest to the city centre, while the much smaller Treviso airport is around 20 miles north and mostly used by the ͽ»» ¹Ò¶õµ¡¤Ë¤è¤ë Ryanair. Treviso is also a good choice if you¡Çre looking to Ï¢¹ç¤µ¤»¤ë a city break in Venice with a wider õ¸¡ of the Veneto ÃÏ°è.

Marco Polo airport is ¿ø¤¨¤ëd on the ËÜÅÚ¡¿ÂçΦ four miles from Venice. An ATVO coach, or the number 5 ACTV Aerobus ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ð direct ´Ø·¸s to the city. ι¹Ô time is around 20?25 minutes and both buses ½ª·ë¤µ¤»¤ë at Piazzale Roma, ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë to the vaporetto piers and main Å´Æ» ±Ø¡¿ÇÛÃÖ¤¹¤ë. Alternatively, you can take an Alilaguna airport boat to different points in the city such as the Piazza San Marco, which may be a better ÁªÂò depending on where your accommodation is °ÌÃÖ¤ò¼¨¤¹d. If you¡Çre Èô¹Ôµ¡¤Ç¹Ô¤¯ing into Treviso airport, Barzi or ATVO buses are timed with arrivals and will take you into central Venice.

Travelling by train is a ËÜʪ¤Î Âå°Æ¡¿ÁªÂò»è to Èô¹Ôµ¡¤Ç¹Ô¤¯ing, and you could even fork out for a once-in-a-lifetime trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient ɽÌÀ¤¹¤ë. This ¹âµé¤Ê rail ι¹Ô takes around 24 hours and will »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë you »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë more than ¡ò2,000, but you¡Çll be °·¤¦¡¿¼£ÎŤ¹¤ëd to one of the most glamorous travel experiences imaginable.

Where to stay

The entire city of Venice is a tourist attraction, so it¡Çs unsurprisingly crammed with hotels, ·ÞÉдÛs and B&Bs. Many of these are richly ÅÁÅýŪ¤Ê in style, but more Ʊ»þÂå¤Î design is beginning to take »ý¤Ä¡¿¹´Î±¤¹¤ë, ÆÃ¤Ë at the pricier end of the market. But if you¡Çre after Baroque-style rooms ËÁ¸±Åª¤Ê Murano chandeliers and rococo fabrics, you¡Çre in luck. Even some of the cheaper ÁªÂòs are »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë within antique-filled palazzos, while the ¹âµé¤Ê °ä»º ½êͭʪ¡¿»ñ»º¡¿ºâ»ºs lining the Grand Canal are Á°¸þ¤¤Ë¡¿³Î¤«¤Ë ¹¿¿åing with old world Venetian charm.

It¡Çs ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë remembering that space is at a ¾ÞÍ¿¶â in Venice, whatever Æù¿Æ¡¤¿ÆÎàd of price ÈÏ°Ï you¡Çre looking at. Room sizes can be modest, ÆÃ¤Ë in the very old buildings of the city centre. It¡Çs best to embrace this as part of the Á´ÂΤˤ錄¤ë µ¬ÌÏ and cosiness of the city, and prioritise other factors like the ¾ì½ê and the ¸«²ò¡Ê¤ò¤È¤ë¡Ë when making your final choice.

If you¡ Çre on a tight ͽ»» but still want to stay in the central historic Ã϶è, look at the more µï½»¤Î neighbourhoods like Castello or Dorsoduro. Alternatively, if you¡Çre visiting Venice for a special occasion you could splurge on any number of five-À±¡¿¼çÌò¤Ë¤¹¤ë hotels. ºÇ¹âĬ¤Î¾ìÌÌs ´Þ¤à the Philippe Starck-designed Palazzina G; the 15th century, Grand Canal-ľÌ̤¹¤ëing Gritti Palace and the ultra-luxurious Aman Venice, which received the Clooneys¡Ç stamp of À§Ç§ after their wedding there in 2014.?

Venice ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ðs some experiences many would consider ɬ¿Ü¤Î: a night at the ¥ª¥Ú¥é, ¸ºß serenaded by a gondolier, enjoying a perfectly ¡Ê¼êÀè¤Î¡Ëµ»½Ñd Bellini at Harry¡Çs ˸¤²¤ë¡¿Ë¡ÄÊÛ¸î»Î¶È. But in this magical city, even a simple vaporetto ride is enough to give you a sense of occasion. These public boats ply all the ¿åÏ©s of the lag oon and are a ¹Âç¤Ê¡¿Â¿¿ô¤Î¡¿½ÅÍ×¤Ê way to get a quick sense of the place when you first arrive. For example, if you board the number 1 vaporetto line at Piazzale Roma, you¡Çll essentially get a relaxed ¾®Î¹¹Ô¤¹¤ë of the entire Grand Canal ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ Piazza San Marco, passing under the Rialto ¶¶¡ÊÅϤ·¤ò¤¹¤ë¡Ë along the way ? and it will only »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë you »Ù±ç¤¹¤ë a few euros.

The historic ³Ë¿´¡Çs ºÇ¹âĬ¤Î¾ìÌÌs are ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë together, so a city break should give you time to see them all. Most unforgettable are the Byzantine St. ¼¨¤¹¡Çs Basilica, with its amazing golden mosaics, and the ¸«²ò¡Ê¤ò¤È¤ë¡Ës from the 318 feet-high (97m) San Marco Campanile across the square. The Doge¡Çs Palace sits ¤È°ì½ï¤Ë, ľÌ̤¹¤ëing the Grand Canal. Other palaces in Venice that shouldn¡Çt be ¹ÔÊýÉÔÌÀ¤Ë¤Ê¤ëd ´Þ¤à the Accademia Galleries, with their Titian and Tintoretto masterpieces, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection of modern art, which ´Þ¤às ºîÉÊ by Picasso and Dali.

But in Venice, there¡Çs much ³Ú¤·¤ß to be had in ´Êñ¤Ë wandering away from the main thoroughfares, without worrying where you¡Çll ·ë¶ÉºÇ¸å¤Ë¤Ï¡¼¤Ê¤ë. Beyond the ¡Ê¿Í¤¬¡Ë·²¤¬¤ës you¡Çll find Ê¿ÏÂŪ¤Ê squares and pavement caf?s, where you can sit and soak up the spirit of this fascinating ÌÜŪÃÏ.

Venice has long been known for mediocre restaurants service lacklustre ¡Ætourist¡Ç menus, often at disproportionate prices. But it¡Çs no longer the »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô that you must search far and wide for ¼Á and value. While these tourist 櫡ʤˤ«¤±¤ë¡Ës do still »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ë in ³Î¤«¤Ê areas of the city, there are plenty of ȯÀ¸ÃÏs just off the beaten path where you can enjoy decent food and drink in an authentic setting. This could be a typical Venetian bacaro serving simple stand-up ·Ú¿©s, or ciccheti, or a feast of lagoon fish and polenta in an upmarket canal-Ì£Êý¤¹¤ë trattoria.

Venetian dishes to try ´Þ¤à delicious fried sardines, or ¥Þ¥°¥í or meat polpette (meatballs), or a piled-high plate of ÅÁÅýŪ¤Ê squid ½ð̾¡¿Ä´°õ¤¹¤ë pasta. A sweeter speciality are the pastry fritters ¿¼¤¤ fried with candied fruit, raisins and pine nuts known as fritole, which are °ìÈÌ¤Ë served around Carnevale time.
