Inside Croatia's abandoned 港/避難所 of hedonism: The derelict remains of Haludovo Hotel, the once-decadent 訴える手段/行楽地 owned by a US porn baron and たびたび(訪れる)d by Saddam Hussein

Dozens of 廃虚d and dilapidated former hotels, casinos and 明言する/公表する-owned 訴える手段/行楽地s stand along Croatia's bejewelled Adriatic coast, abandoned after the Yugoslav Wars.?

But there is one with a 特に salacious history ? the Haludovo Hotel.

支援する in the 1970s, it was a 港/避難所 of hedonism. Conceived of and bank-rolled by (頭が)ひょいと動く Guccione, one of America's most 悪名高い porn barons, hostesses in corsets called 'Penthouse Pets' swanned around, bringing guests シャンペン酒. Saddam Hussein would stay in the master 控訴.

Now it is graffiti-strewn and 破片-riddled, a building code nightmare.

But though the former palace of 'Peace and Porn' is a 悪化するing husk, many curious tourists still make a 巡礼の旅 to its remains, on the sun-drenched island of Krk, to 逮捕(する) its derelict grandeur in photographs. Haludovo is almost as fascinating a structure in decay as it was when it was a swinging hotspot.

In the 1960s, Guccione ? 創立者 of Penthouse Magazine, the first American 出版(物) to feature 十分な-frontal nudity ? dreamed of building a lavish 訴える手段/行楽地 in Malinska, Krk, 構成するd of 高級な hotels and a grand casino, to attract a 豊富な American clientele to the 大部分は ignored 社会主義者 Yugoslavia.

It seemed a canny 商売/仕事 決定/判定勝ち(する): although the country had casinos for tourists, the people of Yugoslavia were banned from 賭事ing in them. その結果 casinos went 大部分は untaxed.?

Guccione hoped 豊富な American tourists would 長,率いる to Krk to 賭事 away their money at his hotel, where he could 雇う 地元のs to work without any American 雇用 規則s in play.

In a 1972 interview with 無線で通信する 解放する/自由な Europe, Guccione said he believed his 訴える手段/行楽地 would be a 'real 決まり文句/製法 in the struggle against the 冷戦' (人命などを)奪う,主張するing it would help humanise the 社会主義者 Croats in the 注目する,もくろむs of Americans and 副/悪徳行為 versa.

Guccione sunk $45million (だいたい $376m/£296m i n modern 通貨) into the 開発 of the 所有物/資産/財産 and the casino (under the 所有権 of Croat 企業 group Brodokomerc), enlisting Boris Maga?, one of the most celebrated Croatian architects of the twentieth century, to design the コンビナート/複合体. At the time the hotel was strikingly modern: now architects consider it a classic example of the brutalist style.

Every インチ of the コンビナート/複合体 was designed for leisure, 楽しみ, and decadence: from glittering chandeliers to poolside cocktail service and from a bowling alley to modish 'conversation 炭坑,オーケストラ席s'.?

During its first year, 報告(する)/憶測s 見積(る) guests 消費するd 100kg (224lb) of lobster, 5kg (11 lb) of caviar and hundreds of 瓶/封じ込めるs of シャンペン酒 each day. Penthouse 'Pets' ? Though you may assume these ladies were 雇うd to titillate, Guccione 主張するd to one 出版(物) they were part of his 計画(する) for East-West appeasement, calling them 'the peace 軍隊s of the new world'.

In its heyday the 訴える手段/行楽地 was a 会合 poin t for 全世界の 独裁者s and 政治家,政治屋s, American 週末 gamblers, the Yugoslav music scene, and ordinary 国民s. Saddam Hussein was one of Haludovo's most 悪名高い guests.?

What Haludovo did not do, however, is make money: in 1973 it 宣言するd 破産 予定 to its extravagant 維持費s, although it managed to stay open over the next two 10年間s (Guccione haemorrhaged money into the 所有物/資産/財産, part of what a friend called 'a succession of colossally unwise 商売/仕事 投機・賭けるs') until 1991, when Yugoslavia was 荒廃させるd by civil war.

What was once a bolthole for the glitterati became a literal 避難: families 追い出すd by the war were housed in the now out-of-service hotel throughout the war. Upset when they were 無作法に 立ち退かせるd from the 所有物/資産/財産 at the war's end, many 難民s stripped Haludovo of any item of value imaginable: 麻薬を吸うs, radiators, 巡査 wiring, and electric sockets.
